The consequences of trepanation of the skull as a method of surgical treatment

Trepanation of the skull or craniotomy is one of the methods of surgical treatment. It is applied under the following conditions:

  1. Treatment of brain tumors, both malignant and benign. As a result, a biopsy of brain areas is performed, as well as complete or partial removal of formations;
  2. Removal of pathological formations of blood vessels in the brain, for example, arteriovenous malformation;
  3. Treatment of craniocerebral injuries and intracerebral infections;
  4. Treatment of a number of neurological diseases, for example, acute epilepsy.

This procedure can have very different consequences. Trepanation is not only a violation of the integrity of the skull, but also penetration into its cavity. The scale of this surgical intervention is determined by the severity of the disease, the amount of damage or localization of tumors. The consequences of trepanation of the skull depend on the patient's postoperative state. Predestination is very difficult. All people in different ways tolerate such operations. Like any other invasive intervention, trepanation has some risks in its conduct. There may be intracranial hemorrhage due to damage to the blood vessels of the brain. The surrounding brain tissue may be injured or the edema may develop. Very rarely, the consequences of trepanation of the skull can result in death or paralysis. Also, there may be various violations of human cognitive functions, such as memory, perception, speech. Often patients complain of headaches, especially during the first few days after surgery, they are disturbed by nausea and vomiting. But in any case, the Trepanized patient is incapacitated for the first three years after the operation. After a disability can be annulled, if there is a general satisfactory state of the patient.

The external consequences of trepanation of the skull are manifested in the development of a defect in the bones of the skull. Since a lifelong removal (resection) of some part of the bone tissue is carried out, after the operation on this part of the head there is a depression. Therefore, a plastic surgery is needed not so much for cosmetic reasons as for the prevention of the Trepanized Syndrome - an extremely unpleasant consequence. In addition, people who have undergone surgery for a long time are prohibited from doing sports and yoga. Some people note that the consequences of trepanation of the skull can manifest itself in a sharp deterioration of memory and attention, weight loss, nervousness, short-term periodic clouding of consciousness, sleep disturbances, weakness of the muscles of the legs, violation of digestion processes. But it is difficult to accurately relate these symptoms to the result of the operation, since it may be side effects of the medicinal steroid medications taken after the operation. They are designed to reduce puffiness in the operated area. Sometimes it is necessary to take anticonvulsants to block epileptic seizures.

Rehabilitation after trepanation of the skull is long. Stay patient in the hospital lasts about 10 days, and then he undergoes a slow recovery course at home. The operated area must be kept clean at all times, washing it with running water and soap. It is necessary to avoid any physical exertion. With a sharp deterioration in the state of health, which may occur a few weeks after trepanation, or an increase in body temperature of more than 38 degrees, you urgently need to consult an operating surgeon. It is also recommended to refrain from managing any vehicles and not to work with devices that require concentration and speed of reaction.
