Summer plot: Do you need to cut roses for the winter?

Queen of flowers rose - a plant quite complex in care. When it grows, you must follow certain rules. In particular, many summer residents are interested in the question of whether it is necessary to cut roses for the winter. There is no unequivocal answer to it. In this respect, everything depends solely on the variety of roses. Do not cut for the winter, for example, climbing roses, as well as park and those varieties that bloom only once a year. For any species, the spring pattern is considered much more preferable. However, in order to cover plants with wireframe film structures, it is still necessary to shorten the branches in autumn.

So, is it necessary to cut roses for the winter? It is necessary, but it should be done very carefully. There are three types of autumn pruning - long (weak), moderate (medium) and short (strong). The first way is perfect, for example, for red Bengal roses. In this case, only the upper parts of the shoots are cut off. On each of them should remain the order of nine kidneys. A moderate method can be applied to hybrid-tea varieties. In this case, the branches are cut approximately halfway. On the shoots, you need to leave about five kidneys.

With a short method of trimming at the base, leave one or two kidneys. This method is most suitable for very proliferating, branching varieties. For example, for roses-polyants. Varieties that grow in the form of a single shoot are not cut off, but only slightly prick the top. In this case in spring they will give more shoots. The question of whether to cut roses for the winter, of course, is important. However, it is equally important to properly prepare plants for wintering.

Many summer residents cover roses with special constructions, which are wire frames, covered with sackcloth or film. After installation on the bushes, they usually pour sawdust. However, it is preferable to use spruce lagets as a cover. If there is an opportunity, you should use this method. The fact is that the roses covered in this way and sprinkled with snow will overwinter, most likely, much better. The air will go to the whips, so they do not get out.

So, how to cut roses for the winter, we found out. But no less important is the question of when this should be done. Autumn pruning is carried out only after the minus temperature is set on the street (-1 ...- 2 gr.). In the central part of Russia this event is held, therefore, around mid-November. Earlier than frosts come, pruning can not be carried out, because in this case the buds will begin to grow on roses. And this fall, of course, is highly undesirable.

So, you now know the answer to the question of when to cut roses in autumn - in October. During this period, it is also necessary to remove green young shoots. The fact is that not lignified shoots will freeze on the first frosty day. During the thaw, it will begin to rot, and it will necessarily have all sorts of harmful fungi, which can infect and the main shoots.

Do you need to cut roses for the winter - a question that causes a lot of controversy among flower lovers. Each summer resident should solve it for himself. Still, the spring pruning with roses, as already mentioned, is considered much more useful. However, in order to make it easier to cover flowers for the winter, to shorten shoots in autumn is still worth it.
