Summary: "The Bride" by Anton Chekhov.
Read A.P. Chekhov - pleasure. Write about it - enjoy. To him we are inferior, offering the reader a work (short summary) of Chekhov's "Bride."
Somerset Maugham wrote that the only purpose of an artwork is to entertain the reader. If he learns something or learns something, it's good, but not the main thing. At the same time, the classic of English literature worshiped Chekhov. But the Russian writer himself, in turn, could not subscribe to the words of his admirer, for his works are always being taught something. To understand what the essay chosen by us for the article teaches, it is necessary to set out a brief summary of the chapters of Chekhov's The Bride.
Chapter first
A provincial town is going to have a dinner party, apparently in honor of the final decision on the fate of Nadia. Nadia is a girl of 23 years old, and from 16 she dreams of getting married. Praise be to heaven, there was also a suitable fiancé - Andrey Andreich (he is the son of a local cathedral archpriest). In the house there is a viscous atmosphere of general idleness. Nadya and her fiance do not work. Andrei Andreich graduated from the Faculty of Philology, but not only that permanent, but generally no one has any business. In addition to the young people, the dinner is attended by Nadi's grandmother, in whose hands the basic capital of the family. Nadina Mama (the wife of her late grandmother's son) also leads a completely idle and meaningless way of life: she talks with Father Andrei about astrology and occult practices, cries over books, goes to bed early and gets up late. And they all think that they live perfectly normal. Another opinion on this issue is held by Sasha, a distant relative from Moscow.
He is not rich, so he needs to work. The Moscow guest comes to the provincial town solely to improve his health: he is very sick, but he dislikes the whole life that the inhabitants of the house are doing, and every year when he comes, he tells Nadya about it, since he believes that only among her All of them and you can still save. The rest are stuck in idleness, like flies in amber.
The first chapter ends with a detailed description of the evening, then everyone goes home.
The work (its brief content) The "Bride" of Chekhov begins with a completely prosperous picture, but further, in the course of the narrative, the arrangement of the life of the heroes gives cracks.
Chapter Two
Before the wedding there is a month or a little less, but Nadia does not sleep at night, reality in general seems to her some kind of depressing. Surprisingly, she tries to share her doubts with her mother, and it turns out that she and she not only speak different languages, but also live on different planets. Nadia first discovered the total dependence of the mother on her grandmother, her stupidity and her misfortune. For the first time ever, Sasha's conversations about sense, morality and other "high topics" fall on the fertile soil of girlish doubts about whether she is doing what she is getting married. To her, so far only implicitly and implicitly it seems that she is making a mistake. Nadia begins to thinklessly about the possibility of studying in another city.
At this point the story (and with it a brief summary) of Chekhov's "Bride" gives the reader hope for some intrigue, which, under the pen of the master, is about to reveal himself. It is good that the reader is not deceived in his expectations.
Chapter Three
If the chapters in this story by AP Chekhov had names, then this one could be boldly entitled "vulgarity and aversion".
In it, Andrei Andreitch and Nadia inspect the house that they hired for them. The son of Father Andrey walks through the rooms and admires, and Nadia is troubled both from him and from these rooms, and from his endless empty talk and false self-flagellation, and from a false repentance for being a loafer. She always wants to go home, and she realizes that she does not like Andrei at all (maybe she never loved me), and even more: he hates her.
Returning home, she discovers that the preparations for the wedding are disgusting. All this fuss, another dinner, showing only the exorbitant pride of Granny, is disgusting to her!
A distant relative - Sasha, apparently, also experiences similar feelings, so he decides to leave, but he is asked to stay for a while, and he concedes.
In this chapter, the work (a summary) of Chekhov's "Bride" does, though expected, but a steep turn. It becomes obvious that the life of the heroes will not be the same, and that all plans for the future, which were before, are no longer fated to come true.
Chapter Four
The decision to leave immediately goes to Nadya. She has a conversation with her mother, in which she confesses that she does not love her fiance, that she does not understand why her mother lives like that. Mother, in turn, tries to reason with her daughter, says that everything will be formed. Nadia does not want to listen to her. Once again, she opens the whole platitude of the existence of her relatives. She runs to Sasha and asks permission to leave with him tomorrow. He is so glad that he starts to dance. Young people agree: Nadia will go to escort him to the station, then he will go along with him to the car (he will buy a ticket to her), then she will reach Moscow, and there she will break up to Peter without him. Northern Palmyra will meet her with coolness and new scientific knowledge.
The sedated girl returned to her room and fell asleep.
This chapter is the most dynamic in the story, and all thanks to the fact that Anton Chekhov is filigree. "Bride" (the brief content quite conveys the emotionality of the moment) makes the reader tremble.
Chapter Five
Very small. It absorbs only the description of Nadine departure from home. There is a strong rain, which accompanies the escape of the girl. She recalls the failed nest with Andrei Andreich, the memory of this no longer stings and burdens. Everything seems unimportant compared to the future intoxicating free air.
In the fourth and fifth chapter reaches its peak and it successfully passes the story "Bride". Chekhov (the summary also does not allow to hide it) - the great master of his craft.
Chapter Six and Last
In it, the narrative calms down and comes to a logical conclusion. Nadia, who lived about half a year in St. Petersburg, goes home. The disturbances there have already passed. Both mother and grandmother already resigned themselves to the fact that their child grew up, and Nadia missed them. She also stopped in Moscow to see Sasha. He was very sick. I talked about the same thing (about the importance of education, etc.), but his speeches no longer touched the girl's heart, and the distant relative seemed to her terribly provincial. Nevertheless, she warmly thanked him for what he had done for her.
Sasha told her that he would soon go to the Volga. His whole appearance and condition told him that he did not have much time left to live.
Nadia arrived safely home. The roads in the city seemed wide, and at home they were small. Grandmother and mother met her well. Long crying. Nadia looked at the house and relatives with completely different eyes, like the ghosts of the past. It seemed to the girl that everything (the house, people) had a seal of decay and decay. Nevertheless, she spent there for a while (about a month). There she was caught by the news of Sasha's death, and after that she left without feeling the bitterness of loss, but anticipating the sweetness of a new, filled with the content of life.
This turned out an article, the focus of which was Chekhov. "Bride" (a summary of the chapters) on this we studied completely. And what this story teaches, let the reader decide himself.
