Skagen is a place where the Baltic Sea and the North Sea border

We invite you to get acquainted with the cozy resort town, the northernmost point of Denmark. In addition, that Skagen is a city of amazing picturesque nature, here you can witness a unique natural phenomenon. Here the Northern and Baltic seas are bordered . The border is visible to the naked eye. This is truly a delightful sight!

Skagen is a small cozy Danish town

The small town is located on the cape called Grenen, it divides the Straits of Kattegat and Skagerrak. The first separates Denmark from Sweden, and the second - from Norway.

The warm current of the Gulf Stream is washed by the Grenen Cape, and therefore there are more than a whole sunny day in the year. Due to this Skagen has become one of the most attractive Danish resorts. Here are located cottages business elite of the whole Scandinavian peninsula.

Features of the town

Sand is Skagen's main attraction, and at the same time his punishment. Sand dunes move all the time, despite the fact that the locals always plant them with trees and grass. The struggle against sand has been going on for more than 200 years.

In the middle of the 19th century, the city was chosen by artists. Some came here for the entire summer season, in order to perpetuate nature in their pictures of amazing beauty, the urban life of the Scagen settlers. They were afraid that after a while everything would turn out to be tons of sand. A unique piece of land between the two seas is reflected in the works of artists such as Michael and Anna Anker, PS Kreyer, etc. Since Skagen has always been a fishing city, many canvases depict local fishermen. Now the works are kept in the museum of painting.

On the "edge of the world" lived and the famous storyteller GH Andersen. He said that here any person can visit incredible inspiration.

One of Scagen's business cards is the "Buried Church". Constant pressure of the elements, she surrendered in the middle of the 18th century, and now the first floor is completely sanded. Today, the white walls of the Lutheran church beautifully rise above the sand dunes.

Cape Grenen is a must for tourists. Here you can see with your own eyes how the Baltic Sea and the North Sea connect. This place residents consider the main attraction of the city.

A unique landscape

Only here, a few kilometers from Skagen, if you walk along the coast to Cape Grenen, one hand can be lowered into the Baltic Sea, and the North Sea will splash under the second. The merging of the two seas creates the effect of some mystery, mysticism. Local residents even call this place "the end of the world". Despite the fact that the temptation to swim immediately in two seas is extremely high, swimming here is strictly forbidden - the current is too strong, it can be dangerous for life.

Nature of the phenomenon

The Baltic Sea and the North Sea do not mix at their point of contact, since the water currents have different densities. Their area of contact is relatively small. The reason is that the place where the Baltic Sea and the North Sea meet is shallow.

Due to the fact that the Baltic Sea is flooded with numerous freshwater rivers, the salinity level of its waters is quite low. Most of the waters of this sea do not flow out of the Baltic basin. There is only a small passage to the North Sea. And the Baltic Sea would be a huge lake with fresh water, if not for him.
