Rivne NPP is one of the most reliable nuclear power plants in Ukraine

1971 - the year began the preparation of design documentation for the first nuclear power plant in the western part of Ukraine. The original name is "Western-Ukrainian NPP", changed in the process of construction.

In 1980, the first electricity already worked for the benefit of consumers.

general information

The maximum power that can be generated by the Rivne NPP is 2 million 835 thousand kW. The station generates more than ten percent of all Ukrainian electricity and twenty of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

The total number of personnel participating in the work of the "Separate Unit" Rivne NPP "exceeds eight thousand people, almost four thousand of them have higher specialized education.

The station complies with all international safety requirements, confirmed by repeated rigorous inspections of the IAEA and the world organization uniting companies that operate nuclear power plants - HLW.

By the way, this is the first nuclear power plant of the Soviet Union, which has accepted international inspectors. The multinational delegation delivered the highest assessment of safety and organization of work processes.

Geographical position

Rivne NPP is located on the bank of the Styr River. The territory is characterized by low density, remoteness from large cities, infertile soils. Rivne NPP on the map of Ukraine is located in the city of Kuznetsovsk, named in honor of the famous intelligence officer Nikolai Kuznetsov. The overwhelming majority of the inhabitants of the village are connected with the Rivne NPP. Even on the city's coat of arms there is an image of the nuclear power plant.

Power Units

Rivne NPP operates four nuclear reactors - two WWER-440s built in 1980 and 1981, each 440 MW capacity, and two upgraded, more technically advanced WWER-1000 ones. The third unit of the Rivne nuclear power plant was in 1986.

The last power unit was commissioned only in 2004. The Rivne nuclear power plant fell under a moratorium on the construction and commissioning of any nuclear facility, adopted in 1991 by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

Only in 1994, after the ban was abolished, the work was continued, but stretched out for almost a decade due to unstable funding and security additions to the technical documentation.

In the original project, it was planned to build two more power units with a total capacity of two megawatts. At the moment the project is frozen, but in the future, its implementation is possible. The commissioning will allow solving many problems with electric energy, both inside Ukraine and neighboring countries. The approximate cost of one power unit is one billion euros.

Research and safety

Rivne NPP produces not only electric energy. Almost from the very first day of the station's opening, there is a laboratory that studies remote methods of monitoring the reactor zone. Advanced physicists take part in research.

The research staff conducts the development of documentation, monitoring the technical state of each of the reactors and the station as a whole, and the modernization and development of databases.

Sixteen posts on the territory of nuclear power plants round the clock make measurements of radiation background and emissions. Modern meteorological complexes fix the speed and direction of the wind, pressure, temperature of the environment. The data are freely available on the official site of the station.

The main principle that guides NPP employees is to maintain the maximum level of equipment safety. The station has a hard access system. The level of safety corresponds to the advanced world standards.
