Mumps in the baby: symptoms that help to recognize the disease

Epidemic parotitis, popularly known as mumps, is one of the most common childhood diseases. How does the baby's mumps appear? Symptoms of this disease, as a rule, can be observed in children aged 3-5 to 10-12 years. Babies who are less than a year have practically no chance of getting sick, because they are under the protection of innate immunity.

Like other viral infections, parotitis makes itself felt by fever (up to 38-39 degrees). Mumps in a child, the symptoms of which we are now discussing, also causes general weakness, lethargy and malaise.

The most revealing sign can be considered the formation of swelling in the salivary gland around the ears. Sometimes this symptom appears on both sides, but more often - with only one. Because of this swelling and swelling, it becomes painful for the baby to chew and open his mouth wide. To the touch, the formations have a doughy consistency, they can be painful, but the skin over them is not affected. So the mole begins in the child.

Symptoms that may occur in the future - is a deterioration of health, the emergence of headaches and discomfort in the abdominal region. They are associated with the fact that the place where the duct of the salivary gland swells and inflames.

Some patients are affected, among other things, submandibular and sublingual salivary glands (i.e., testicular formations also occur in the region of the lower jaw and chin). They are rather painful. On the 4th-5th day of the course of the disease, the glands increase most strongly, and then gradually, by the 10th day, the swelling decreases in size.

The current of saliva, which is necessary for cleaning teeth and mouth from plaque and saturation of a baby's teeth with mineral substances, is disturbed. As a result, the risk of caries development, the appearance of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) is significantly increased . Mumps in a child, the symptoms of which we are considering in this article, may also be accompanied by infectious stomatitis. This, again, is associated with a violation of the antibacterial function of saliva.

How is mumps treated in children?

Treatment of the most simple form of the disease, when only the salivary glands are affected, is performed at home. The child should be isolated from the surrounding, regularly ventilate the room and conduct wet cleaning. It is advisable to comply with bed rest. Inflamed glands should be constantly warm. Experts advise to alternate oil compresses with half-alcohol. Think about and the moments associated with nutrition: it is better to give the baby rubbed, semi-liquid and liquid food, avoid sharp and spicy foods. You should drink as much liquid as possible: warm boiled water, herbal decoctions, teas and juices. It will be useful to rinse the mouth with a solution of baking soda, which will reduce the activity of viruses.

In more complex forms of the disease, specialist intervention is required that will be able to determine what causes complications and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Pig - a disease in children that occurs very often - should not cause the parents a strong excitement. Observe all the recommendations of pediatricians - and in 10-12 days your child will be on the mend!
