Merge and separate spelling of unions in Russian

Split and separate spelling of unions is a simple topic. To avoid mistakes, it is necessary to distinguish these service parts of speech from other elements found in the text. Rules and examples are described in the article.

The concept of

"Merge and separate spelling of unions" - the spelling section. It is dedicated to the rules of using the official parts of speech in writing. They are often mistaken for combinations of pronouns and particles or other elements of the language. Hence the error.

There are two types of unions:

  1. Derivatives.
  2. Non-derivatives.

Both the first and the second are designed to implement the connection of homogeneous speech members or components of a complex sentence.

Cause of spelling errors

Split and separate writing of derivative unions causes special difficulties. The service parts of speech of this kind are formed by the combination of other elements. That is why mistakes often occur. Derived alliances are the following types of combinations:

  • Two non-derivative unions ( but also, as, as if );
  • A demonstrative word, a preposition and an alliance ( so that, in order to );
  • A pronoun, a preposition, and a word with a generalizing meaning ( as long as, while, while ).

Thus, the conjoint and separate writing of conjunctions is a topic in which it is not easy to understand without having an idea of the types of service parts of speech. Non-derivatives occur on the letter often ( and, and, but ). Derived unions are used less often, they are formed from other parts of speech and are written separately. There are other classifications of unions. For example:

  1. Writings.
  2. Subordinate.

In the first case, we are talking about the service parts that perform the connection between words with the same grammatical features. In the second - about the unions, found in complex sentences. We will not go into a more detailed classification. Merge and separate writing of unions should be considered on specific examples.

Union "to"

It is often confused with the combination of a particle and a pronoun. Especially in the event that this element is after the comma, and the subordinate clause begins with it . In order to distinguish the union from such a combination, you should try to rearrange the particle to another place in the offer. Examples:

  1. There is no such remedy to relieve his pain.
  2. There is no such means that would ease his pain.

In the first variant the error. If the "to" element can separate "would" without loss of meaning, then this is nothing more than a combination of a pronoun and a particle. If the meaning of "to" is equivalent to "in order" is a union. Examples:

  1. The editor invited the author to conclude the contract.
  2. The director summoned the parents to inform them.

But the combination "what would" is found not only in subordinate clauses. It can be found in a simple narrative or interrogative sentence. Separate writing in such cases is obvious:

  1. What else could you think of?
  2. Whatever you say, I will not change my decision.

Important to remember!

"By all means" is always written separately.

Particles

There are elements in Russian that can be assigned to different categories. For example, "allegedly" can be both a particle and an alliance. The same can be said about "let", "the same", "like". But there are combinations formed of two elements ( if, if only, as if ). They act both as a union and as a particle. Are written separately. Consider the use of these words on examples. Proposals, in which there is a merged and separate writing of alliances and particles:

  1. He dreamed that he was walking along a country road and met yesterday's stranger.
  2. Only the lazy person did not talk about her in the village. She was supposedly a witch and every night she flew out of the chimney on a real broomstick.
  3. He did not remember yesterday's events, as if nothing had happened.
  4. We would have managed to bring it to the end, if you did not interfere with your advice.
  5. His gaze seemed to ask: "Why are you telling me about this?"

Unions "too", "also"

Pronouns in combination with a particle are written separately. And they are important not to be confused with "too" and "also", which are synonymous with the union of "and". After the above combination is often the word "most". It is one of the confirmations of separate writing. Other signs are the presence of the union word "what", adverbs "how". For example:

  1. Every day he repeated the same thing.
  2. The same can be said about the author's last book.
  3. The family spent the summer just like the previous one.
  4. The teacher did the same as his colleagues.

Often, without access to a broad context, it is not easy to understand which option is right. Examples:

  1. The rest of the children started screaming and rummaging around the room (The rest of the children started doing what others did).
  2. The rest of the children also began to rush around the room and squeal (And the rest of the children began to rush around the room and squeal).

Important to remember!

It is written together "too" as a particle. For example: "I'm also a professional!"

Prepositions

Unions "but", "moreover," and "where" are never written separately. They need to be distinguished from combinations of pronouns and prepositions. For example: "with what", "with that", "for that". Split and separate writing of prepositions and conjunctions sometimes causes certain difficulties. In order to find the right option, you should analyze the part of the sentence. Examples:

  1. The experiment was not carried out successfully, and for the first time (in addition to this).
  2. This speech was informative and interesting.
  3. What have you to do with your claims?
  4. At that enterprise there was a small printing house.
  5. The tour lasts all day, but it is interesting and very informative.
  6. He then came to spoil the festive evening (for some purpose).
  7. He came for what he had been looking for for many years.
  8. Why (for whatever reason) do you always judge people badly?
  9. By what (by what criteria) do you determine the changes in his mood?

Union "so"

The source of spelling errors is often the inability to recognize which part of the speech the word belongs to. There is a union of "so". But also in the texts there is a combination of "and so". Its constituents are an adverb and an alliance. Below are proposals in which there is a merging and separate writing of unions and adverbs.

  1. And so he reasoned for a very long time, until everyone heard the long-awaited phrase: "So, let's sum up."
  2. And so languidly the meeting was held that he was already hoping to get away from uncomfortable questions, when suddenly the threatening voice of the chairman came: "So, let's return to the main topic ...".

Dependence on the context

As already mentioned, it is sometimes difficult to understand in a separate sentence whether the union is properly used. Separate and merging spelling in many cases determines the context. Sometimes a double interpretation is possible. For example:

  1. Because he writes, is of little use.
  2. From what he writes, is of little use.

The first sentence deals with a person who is engaged in a useless occupation. In the second - about writing low-quality texts. There are also colloquial constructions, deviating from the general rules.

Explanatory unions

What else do you need to know about the rules that make up such a section of spelling, as "Split and Separate Writing of Unions"? The examples given above include the main, most complex cases. But there are in the written and oral speech also the unions, designed to explain one of the small passages of the text. They are: "that is", "I mean". Such unions are always written separately. For example:

  1. He spoke this evening, as always, I mean very much.
  2. Three days ago, that is, last week, this person met me on the landing at a rather late hour.

Finally, complex unions "in order", "because" are never written together.
