Most consulting companies are engaged in marketing research of competitors, consumers, industry markets, suppliers, goods and services, including price monitoring, promotion programs.

There are several types of marketing research:

- "exploratory" - this is a marketing research that takes place before a decision is taken or a certain action is taken. Methods of carrying out exploratory marketing research include the analysis of secondary data, analysis of specific situations, the study of past experience and the work of focus groups, benchmarking;

- "descriptive" - these are studies in which specialists answer questions: Who? What? When? How? Where? Most of them are obtained with the help of conducting a desk marketing research, conducting focus-groups, surveys, hall-tests. However, the question Why? Such a study will not give the right answer (for example, why sales volumes increased after the introduction of loyalty programs?) ;

- "casual" - these are studies that are an analysis of cause-effect relationships and the definition of actions and decisions that led to current results.
