Manilov: characteristics ("Dead Souls"). Comparative characteristics of Oblomov and Manilov

The name Manilov makes you think about something sweet, serene. It comes from the word "beckon", which is ironically played out by the author. In this image, NV Gogol creates a parody of the peculiarity of the Russian character, a penchant for dreams and inaction.

Manilov, the characteristic of which occupies an essential part of the narrative, nevertheless, can be described very briefly and in a capacious manner: a man neither that nor that.

Character of the hero

His character can not be uniquely determined.

Manilov is unpractical and good-natured, poorly conducts the economy, the estate manager is informed by the drinking clerk. This led to the fact that he did not derive benefit from the sensitive issue, which Chichikov addressed him. Manilov simply gave him dead souls, amusing himself, however, his vanity by being able to render a person an invaluable service. This hero is the complete antipode of the materialist Sobakevich.

Manilov, whose characteristic can be determined by such words as detachment, indifference, likes to hang in the clouds, while his dreams are absolutely irrelevant to reality.

Initially, it produces a very pleasant impression, but then the interlocutor opens his emptiness. With him it becomes boring and cloying, since Manilov does not have his point of view, but only supports the conversation with banal phrases.

He does not have the life forces that make you do things.

There is an opinion expressed by D. Likhachev that the prototype of Manilov was himself Nikolai the First. Perhaps the academician had in mind the question, not brought to its logical conclusion, of the abolition of serfdom, according to which, nevertheless, meetings of the commissions were very often held.

Appearance of Manilov

Even the appearance of this hero radiates sweetness, sarcasm. As the author notes, his features were pleasant, but the pleasantness was too sugar.

The first impression this landlord makes is positive, but only as long as he does not speak. Manilov, whose characteristic, it would seem, has nothing negative, is unpleasant to the author, who makes us feel his ironic attitude towards him.

Education and education of the hero

This sentimental landlord, in whose pleasantness "too much sugar was given," considers himself an educated, noble and educated person. This does not prevent him, however, two years in a row to keep a bookmark in the book on page 14.

Manilov's speech is filled with amiable words and, rather, it resembles chirping. His manners, one might call good, if not for excessive refinement and delicacy, brought to the point of absurdity. Manilov abuses such words as "allow", "amiable", "honored", overly positively speaks about officials.

Also one can not help noticing in his speech the abundance of vague adverbs and pronouns: such, some, some, some. When he talks about something, it becomes clear that his plans will not come true. The nature of Manilov's arguments makes it clear that his fantasies have nothing to do with reality. So, he dreams of a neighbor who could talk with him "about courtesy, good treatment."

To think about real life, and even more so, to act, he is not capable.
The pretentious names of the children of Manilov, Themistoclus and Alcides, also underscore the desire to appear refined and refined.

This is the landowner Manilov. "Dead Souls" is a characteristic of Russian society of the 19th century. The author's comparison of this hero with "too clever minister" points to the hypocrisy of representatives of the highest state power.

The positive qualities of Manilov

This hero of Gogol's story still can not be called negative. He is full of sincere enthusiasm, sympathy for people, hospitable.

Manilov loves his family, his wife and children. With his wife he has warm and, of course, too sweet relationship: "Razin, darling, your mouth, I'll put this piece to you," says Manilov to his wife. The character of this hero can not be imbued with sweetness.

The hero's leisure

All the lessons of Manilov come down to staying in a fantasy world. He prefers to spend time in the "temple of solitary meditation" and builds projects that will never be able to translate into reality. For example, he wants to draw an underground passage from the house or build a stone bridge across the pond.

The landowner Manilov dreams of all day long. "Dead Souls" is a characteristic of the dead heroes-landlords, whose way of life speaks of the degradation of mankind. It is worth noting that this character, unlike the others, has some appeal.

Comparative characteristics of Oblomov and Manilov

Unlike Manilov, Goncharov's character is not new in Russian literature. Oblomov can be put on a par with Onegin and Pechorin, who also had great potential, but could not realize it.

Like the heroes of Pushkin and Lermontov, so the image, recreated by Goncharov, evokes the reader's sympathy. The hero of Gogol, of course, in something similar to Ilya Ilyich, but compassion and disposition to himself does not cause.

Oblomov and Manilov, the comparative characteristics of which are so often conducted by students at school, are in many ways similar. In the image of the hero of the novel Goncharov, perhaps even less external dynamics: he is lying on the sofa from morning till night, building projects to improve affairs on his estate, reflects, dreams. His plans do not reach realization, because he is lazy enough that sometimes he does not even get up from the couch in the morning to wash himself.

The notions of "Manilovism" and "Oblomovism" are put in one row, but they do not mean the same thing. A synonym for the word "Oblomovism" is "laziness". "Manilovshchina" is best defined by the notion of "vulgarity".

What is the difference between Oblomov and Manilov? The comparative characteristics of these two characters can not bypass such an item as the difference in intellect and the depth of personality of these two characters. Manilov is superficial, tries to please everyone, he does not have his own opinion. Ilya Ilyich, in contrast, is a profound, developed personality. The hero of Goncharov is capable of very serious judgments, he is not afraid of being misunderstood (the scene with Penkin), besides, he is a genuinely kind person. Manilov will be more correctly characterized by the word "good-natured".

The characteristics of Oblomov and Manilov are similar in relation to the heroes to the issues of economic management. Ilya Ilyich ponders the answer to the unpleasant letter of the elder, received a few years ago, reflects on the plans for transforming the affairs of the estate. I must say that such letters, violating his peace, Oblomov receives annually.

Manilov also did not do business, it is carried out by itself. On the offer of the clerk to introduce any transformation, the master replied: "Yes, not bad." Very often Manilov plunges into empty dreams about how well it would be ...

For what reason is the hero of Goncharov's story sympathetic to readers? The fact is that initially Manilov, as Gogol notes, seems to be a pleasant person, but it is worth talking to him for a little longer, as you begin to feel deadly boredom. Oblomov, on the contrary, initially does not make a very pleasant impression, but later, revealing himself from the best sides, he conquers the general sympathy and sympathy of the readers.

In conclusion, it should be noted that Manilov is a happy man. He is pleased with his serene lifestyle, he has a beloved wife and children. Oblomov is deeply unhappy. In his dreams, he is fighting the slander, lies and other vices of human society.
