Laminaria: beneficial properties and contraindications

In the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, more precisely, in their northern waters, a special kind of brown algae - laminaria, whose useful properties are known to man for a long time, grows. About thirty kinds of sea cabbage are discovered by science and are successfully used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Appearance and composition

Huge thickets of kelp cover evenly the rocky bottom of the ocean. Outwardly, they are long dark green ribbons (thalluses) 1-15 m long, whose width varies from 3 to 30 cm. They narrow downwards and form the algae trunk, branching into original roots (rhizoids). The laminaria clings firmly to the bottom of the ocean. The life span of algae directly depends on the climatic conditions in which it grows, and on average ranges from 2 to 15 years. Every year in the late autumn, kelp leaves off, and in winter begins to grow with renewed vigor.

Laminaria, useful properties that are successfully used by a person, are valued for thallus. It is in them that by the age of two years a huge amount of valuable substances is formed and accumulated. Mucous, soft, with a wavy edge, they are easy to collect using special poles. This does not harm the population, as laminaria multiplies with the help of mobile zoospores, which are formed and located directly on the thallus surface - in sporangia.

After collection, the algae is washed and lightly dried, resulting in a sweetish patina of whitish color on its surface. This begins to excrete alginic acid - a polysaccharide, of which laminaria consists, its useful properties are not limited to this. In addition to it, the alga contains vegetable protein and fiber. The high content of vitamins A, B 6 , B 12 , C, D and PP make it one of the most valuable gifts of the ocean, and the set of elements (magnesium, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, phosphorus) is a product that everyone needs . And, of course, do not forget about iodine, thanks to which seaweed has become very popular, since it is contained in it in an organic state, and therefore, most fully is taken by the human body.

To all without exception, the system of the human body and their function of kelp has a beneficial effect. With mental and nervous exhaustion, regular use of sea kale is recommended. Thanks to the B vitamins and iodine contained in it, it saturates the human nervous system and normalizes its function. Laminaria, useful properties of which are indispensable for the full functioning of the thyroid gland, is used as a preventive agent of Graves' disease.

If you include in your diet sea kale, you can not only improve digestion, but also get rid of chronic constipation and colitis. The process of metabolism in the body is normalized, which means that it can be considered as an excellent means for losing weight.

Regular use of kelp makes the body resistant to various infections, strengthens immunity. It is also an excellent prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases.

If there is a violation of the sexual function, laminaria is used as an aphrodisiac. And in cosmetology, this is a great tool for strengthening hair and skin care.

However, there are some limitations, according to which laminaria is used with caution. The properties of algae are useful for the body, but in the case of individual intolerance and possible allergic reactions should be abandoned their use. With increased caution to sea kale, it is necessary to treat pregnant women and people suffering from nephritis or furunculosis.
