Is swelling of the mammary glands a cause for anxiety?

Swelling of mammary glands in women is a possible sign of the development of the disease, as well as the result of an abnormal metabolism, a nervous shock, or the consequence of taking specific medications. In any case, a diagnosis and timely treatment, if necessary, is required. The female breast is very sensitive to any changes in the hormonal background. The presence of swelling is by no means an unambiguous sign for anxiety, but it is necessary to observe the doctor to exclude all possible variants of the diseases or to prevent their development.

Perhaps swelling of the mammary glands before menstruation, which is the result of hormonal changes. The second half of the menstrual cycle is characterized by a sharp change in the level of progesterone and estrogen in the blood. This also stimulates swelling. When the level is normal, the mammary glands become supple and soft, as before.

After giving birth for several days, the most dramatic increase in mammary glands is observed, which is associated with an active tide of milk. Sometimes milk comes too early or too intensively. There may be stagnant milk or mastitis. When, after the colostrum, the production of milk begins on the third day, the breast must be well "decanted": drain all the remaining colostrum so that they do not clog the ducts. Blockage can cause milk stagnation. Also, to ensure the correct outflow of milk, it is necessary to wear the bra constantly, so that the breast gets the right shape. When a woman completes breastfeeding, such problems are eliminated by themselves.

Possible reasons for swollen breasts may be too narrow a bra or taking some medications. If the drugs cause a similar reaction, it is necessary to inform the doctor about it. The doctor in such cases additionally prescribes medicines that stimulate the excretion of fluid from the body.

It is possible that the swelling of the mammary glands causes the intake of hormonal contraceptives, in which case a consultation of the gynecologist is needed.

If a woman has similar symptoms, the most important thing is not to press on the mammary glands, do not knead them and do not try to massage. It is recommended to immediately seek help from a specialist.

Very often, the increase in mammary glands occurs in newborns. As a rule, this happens on the third or fourth day of the baby's life. This can be accompanied by the release of fluid from the nipples with light pressure on them. Doctors explain this by transmitting hormones from mother to child through the placenta. Later, the level of the hormonal background is normalized, and the swelling passes.

In order not to provoke swelling of the breast, a woman should limit the use of coffee and salt, carefully choose cosmetics. Remember that women's health can be affected by any, as you think, a trifle. Be carefull!
