Is non-stick coating harmful or not?

Dishes with non-stick coating appeared more than half a century ago. Due to the ease and convenience, this kitchen utensils quickly became popular. But then there were mass publications in the press about the harm of Teflon - the same substance that provides an anti-stick effect.

So far, there is no 100% reliable research that would prove harm or harmlessness of this dish. Producers say that perfluorooctanoic acid (which is attributed to carcinogenicity) is no longer used in the manufacture of Teflon. But even in those times when the technology was still the same, this acid completely disintegrated at the production stage, and in the dishes that reached the buyer, was not contained. The fact is that this element is destroyed at a temperature of 250 degrees Celsius, and the non-stick coating is sprayed at 400 degrees, hence perfluorooctanoic acid was destroyed at the production stage. But manufacturers can be biased.

There is, however, the opinion of independent experts. The fact that the non-stick coating with the use of Teflon is safe for human health, according to the directive of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment BfR. This organization carries out independent research, based on the results of which it makes its conclusions. Do not believe their conclusions there is no reason.

On the other hand, in the media from time to time there are new notes about the dangers of Teflon, but they can be paid for by competitors who produce dishes that have a ceramic non-stick coating. This kind of coating appeared recently, and the dishes with its use are positioned as the safest and resistant to damage.

But such kitchen utensils require Certain attention: she is afraid of sudden changes in temperature. Do not put hot dishes on cold surfaces or vice versa, wash it also with water of appropriate temperature. Still ceramics are afraid of blows - there may be cracks. In general, that still is trouble.

Any cookware that has a non-stick coating, is afraid of overheating. In the description of each product, a maximum heating temperature is necessarily present. It can not be exceeded - it is at this point that the non-stick characteristics begin to deteriorate sharply, the food begins to stick, the surface becomes covered with cracks and the sputtering begins to peel off. Such frying pans can not be used for roasting meat or fish before the formation of a ruddy crust - this is the same overheating. You can not allow a strong heating oil: if it started to smoke, throw out the pan, you spoiled it. This applies not only to Teflon, but also to ceramics. It is safe at high temperatures (in any case, manufacturers say so, and there is no other data yet), but it also loses its non-stick properties when overheated.

It can not be unequivocally said whether the non-stick coating causes harm to our health or not. To use or not such utensils, everyone solves itself. But if you want to purchase it, you must carefully study the rules of use and stick to them, otherwise the money will simply be thrown to the wind.
