How to Cover the Roof with Metal Tile: Calculation and Installation

Metal tile is today one of the most versatile roofing materials. It is made in the form of sheets of steel with galvanizing: the raw material undergoes special treatment for obtaining the effect of imitation of natural tiles, and also the surface is treated with a polymer coating of different color solutions. This type of roofing material is characterized by good technical characteristics, such as a small weight of sheets, strength and durability, ease and speed of installation. Consider the question of how to cover the roof with metal, in detail.

Preparatory work

Before installation, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work, which is a gasket of waterproofing and assembly of the roofing roofing system, as well as the calculation of the required amount of material.

Waterproofing works

On the roofing of metal, moisture usually condenses on the inner side, which eventually leads to undesirable consequences, such as corrosion, decay of roof rafters, etc. To do this, work on waterproofing and laying the internal ventilation. In the question of how to cover the roof with metal roofing, this stage occupies an important place. Below is information that will be useful:

  • The waterproofing is lapped from the eaves to the top, while a ridge of more than 50 mm is left under the ridge to create air channels.
  • The carpet of waterproofing materials is laid on logs or rafters, and it must be strengthened by the system of the crate.
  • Ventilation holes should be provided at the highest point of the roof.
  • In attics without heating create a natural ventilation - end windows, if necessary, build in facilities for forced air circulation.

Assembling the Bundle System

In order to fully reveal the question of how to cover the roof, we will consider the main moments of assembling the system of the crate. To perform the battens it is necessary to use strong boards, having previously treated them with an antiseptic. The recommended size is 30 × 100 mm. The installation of the beams is carried out with a certain step, the value of which is indicated in the instruction sheet supplied with the kit. This interval corresponds to the step of the wave on the sheets.

Laying of the beams begin with the bottom edge, with the very first bar should be thicker than the other elements of the battens by 1-1.5 cm. The boards are fastened across the rafters using self-tapping screws. The bar of the end plan is placed above the crate system at the height of the wave crest, fastened to the rafters with nails of galvanized steel. For a solid installation of the ridge, additional bars are provided. The bar of the cornice must be fixed before the installation of the shingles. The curb in the valley, around the chimneys and attic windows should be laid with a continuous layer.

Calculation of raw material quantity

In order to understand how to cover the roof with metal tiles, you need to take into account that the calculation of the number of sheets of material is carried out for each slope separately, and consists of the following stages:

1. It is necessary to check the symmetry of skates by measuring them diagonally - these quantities should be equal.

2. Then calculate the number of rows along the roof slope. For this, it is necessary to measure the length of the roof slope from the valley to the eaves. This value should be divided into a useful indicator of the width, which is determined by subtracting from the actual width of the metal sheet the overlap value. The result should be rounded up to integers larger. As a rule, tiles are produced in a width of 1.17-1.2 m, while the working value will be the same - 1.1 m, and the rest is used in the overlapping. For example, for a 7 m long ramp, the calculation will be as follows: 7 m ÷ 1.1 m = 6.36 ≈ 7 rows.

3. Next, calculate the number of sheets in a row, the total length of the sheets is determined by adding the length of the ramp, lowering the cornice and the value of the overlap. It is taken into account that the tile is produced with a maximum length of 8 m, and if the total length of the roof slope with the descent does not exceed this value, then the overlap value is 0. However, transportation and installation of large-sized material are difficult, and such sheets require trimming. And if the wave difference on the tile coincides with the cut line, this can lead to undesirable consequences, for example, to deformation or difficulty in assembling. To avoid such situations, it is necessary to choose the optimum length of the sheets. For example, with a slope length of 6 m and a length of 0.5 m overhang, two sheets of 4 m in length can be stacked, with overlap of 0.25 m.

4. The total number of tile sheets is determined by the number of rows and the number of sheets in the row: 7 rows × 2 sheets = 14 sheets per one slope.

Required Tools

Also, in the question of how to cover the roof with metal tile, it is not superfluous to find information about the tools used. During installation, the roofing material must be fitted. You may need the following tools:

  • A special device for cutting tiles from metal.
  • A hammer.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Ruler.
  • Marker.

As a special tool for cutting sheets, it is recommended to use an electric jigsaw, a metal saw with teeth from a win, scissors and other devices. It is important to remember that the use of cutting tools with circles of abrasive, for example, saws-bolgars, is excluded. This is due to the fact that the resulting high temperature can destroy both the polymer coating and the zinc coating, which will lead to corrosion and destruction at the molecular level.

Installation of roofing from metal

After the preparatory works proceed to assemble the material. Important points should be taken into account:

  • Sheets of metal tiles are asymmetrical, they also have top and bottom, so when laying the material consumption increases.
  • The roof with two skates is covered from the front side, and the roof of the hip type on both sides from the highest points.
  • The overlap along the length of the sheets is equal to 250 mm.
  • At the edge of the ledge, a plumb line 40 mm long is made.
  • Metal tiles are mounted with screws into the depth of the wave, for each meter of coating, 8 pieces of connecting elements are needed.

Covering the roof of metal roofs is very economical, since the installation work with tiles is not so complicated. To date, the market for building materials can be found in various roofing materials, prices for which are presented in a wide range. It can be noted that metal tile is the most inexpensive and suitable for most variants of buildings material. The right choice and good installation will help keep your home from any weather problems.
