What is the kibitka: the etymology and meaning of the word

A tug is a wooden, horse-drawn cart used to accommodate not only people but also household items. Unlike the cart there is a covered top covered with a cloth. The very word "kibitka" came from the Arabic "cubats", which means "dome, tent".

To imagine what a kibitka is, today it is possible, perhaps, according to old pictures or feature films devoted to the life of nomadic peoples. On these wagons, until recently, the Roma moved. At distant moving in a tent, several people, usually members of the same family, could stay for the night.

The frame was made of wooden lattices or arches, sometimes the upper part of the cart was a wagon woven from a vine, on top of which, depending on the season, a light canvas or dense felt was stretched. In nomadic Kalmyks, kibitkas were called portable dwellings, having a quadrangular form, covered with a nightmare, which was attached to the base by rope of horsehair. In summer, it was cool inside due to the preservation of a constant temperature according to the thermos principle.

It is not difficult to understand what a tent is, having presented a wooden frame, covered with two layers of felt with an air layer between them. In Central Asian peoples, such temporary buildings were called yurts. A little later the term "kibitka" began to be applied to the permanent dwellings laid out of clay or raw bricks in which poor families lived.

Young girls in the XIX century could easily explain what a kibitka. Around 1880, women's headwear was fashioned, which received the same name. This hat had a round bottom with wide, trimmed lace and slightly curved upward fields. Usually the tent was tied under the chin with satin or silk ribbons.

If you look in profile, the face of the girl was practically not visible behind the frame of the hat. The style of the headdress and the truth is somewhat reminiscent of the shape of a nomadic wagon with a horse driver peering out from under the canopy.
