How and what to paste a ceramic border?

Ceramic curb for the bathroom is a detail that can be purchased complete with tiles. It is used to decorate the crevices between the wall and the bathroom. Many novice home masters are wondering why it is simply impossible to fill the space with a sealant.

The thing is that this method can be used only for cast-iron baths, since they are distinguished by their high strength. However, in this case there are exceptions, expressed in uneven edges. Installation of the curb is best entrusted to the specialist, if you have not done before laying the tiles. But doing everything on your own, you must first familiarize yourself with the technology of work.

Solution

If you have a steel or thin-walled acrylic bath, then under the weight of a person and water, it deforms. This leads to a constant change in the width of the seam. The edge of the acrylic bath is strengthened against the wall. In other cases, the slot can be closed. It should be remembered that the ceramic border is used only in combination with tiles. If the wall is lined with plastic panels or painted, then a more suitable option will be a border of plastic or rubber.

Preparing for installation

If you decide to install the ceramic curb yourself, then you should prepare some materials and tools:

  • Sandpaper;
  • building level;
  • Tile adhesive;
  • Angle grinding machine;
  • Flat and notched trowel;
  • Sealant with the addition of antiseptic.

The Bulgarian must be equipped with a disk, and this equipment will be used for cutting a stone. Sandpaper can be replaced with a grinding bar. If you intend to stick the elements up to the moment of tiling the wall, then the bath should be leveled so that its edges have a horizontal position. If the wall already has a tile, then the bath should be installed in such a way that its edge is parallel to the horizontal seams between the tiles.

Ceramic curbs can be glued only to the surface that is previously degreased, cleaned of dirt and dust, and also dried. Before starting work, the gap is filled with a sealant or a tile adhesive. If this space is too wide and takes up more than 5 mm, then the mounting foam can be used as a filler. And in order for this composition to cure the bath during hardening, the latter must be filled with water. This requirement is due to the fact that the construction foam swells heavily.

Calculating the number of angles

Before making a purchase, you need to determine how many corners you need to carry out the work. To do this, the total length of the seam is measured using a tape measure. The value should be divided by the length of one corner. This will get the minimum number of fillets. To this value, experts recommend adding about 4 elements that may be needed during combat. Spare parts should be more if you do not have special experience in carrying out similar work.

Curb installation before tiling

As mentioned above, the ceramic curb can be stacked according to one of two technologies. The first one presupposes installation before gluing the tiles. This method is the most correct, because the lining in this case will have an ideal appearance. The seam should be the same as all the others. Therefore, in the end, it will be possible to achieve that the coating looked like a single whole.

It must be taken into account that this method is the most complex. Therefore, you should approach the work with special care. Installation should start from the corner. To do this, apply angular fillets, which have the form of the letter "g". If on sale they could not be found, then two parts will need to be cut at an angle of 45 °, as is done with the installation of baguettes or floor skirting.

Before you paste the ceramic curb on the bath, you will have to cut it. However, the probability of chipping is high. Therefore, it is recommended to start cutting on the back side. After the operation has been completed, the butt is processed by sandpaper or a grinding wheel with a grinding wheel. If you do not have an abrasive tool, then the sweep can be performed with a file.

Tile glue is important to properly prepare. It should have a consistency of thick paste, should not crawl over the surface and drain off the spatula. Protruding excess fillets between fillets should be removed with a sponge or a wet rag before the mixture has time to harden.

Methods of work

The border for ceramic tiles on the back should be completely glazed with glue. In the presence of unevenness on the walls, they can be leveled with the help of the composition. The verticality of the wall can be assessed using a long level or rule.

The outer layers of the glue will dry faster, so the mixture can begin to spread. In order to exclude this possibility, after 8 hours after the installation is completed, it is necessary to moisten the curb with water, leaving it in this condition until it dries completely. Once the glue has hardened, you can start laying the tile. You can do it the next day. Between the first row and the fillet there must be a certain width of the seam. This can be achieved using mounting crosses.

Installation of the fillet after tiling

Ceramic borders can be glued even after finishing the walls with tiles. This method is considered the most suitable for a beginner master, but to achieve an ideal picture in this way will not work. As a result, the seam between the tile and the curb will be wider than the rest, the fillet will look like a separate detail.

The tiles should be laid according to the usual technology, and the lower row should be removed from the bath by 1 cm. This lumen will be used for the installation of the curb. If it so happens that the bottom edge of the first row of wall finishing is below the edge of the bath, then the fillet should be glued to the tile. In this case, silicone should be used instead of tile adhesive. Installation of a ceramic border in this case is made by the technology described above. However, the docking of the elements will be more difficult if you plan to use silicone.

Final work

Once the glue has finally hardened, it is recommended to start the final works. When the curb is laid according to the first method, the seam is filled with a moisture-resistant grout, which is used to decorate all other scars on the wall. For the reason that the border is located from the bottom, the moisture on it will stay longer.

To prevent mold from multiplying on the joint, an antiseptic should be added to the grout. If the curb wall ceramic is laid after installing the main lining, then the connection should be filled with acrylic or silicone sealant. It must be done as carefully as possible, only this way it will be possible to eliminate the contamination of the tiles.

Than to paste a ceramic border: silicone hermetic MAKROFLEX SX101

White ceramic curbs can be glued with the above-mentioned sanitary high-performance silicone sealant. It provides high adhesion, has moisture resistance, contains antiseptic components and is resistant to aging. Among the additional advantages should be allocated resistance to ultraviolet radiation.

The composition contains fungicides, which exclude the occurrence of mold. This makes the composition particularly effective in those rooms where the environment is highly humid. Apply the mixture at a wide temperature range. However, the thermometer should not fall below +20 ° C. The composition can be operated at temperatures that vary from +5 to +40 ° C. If there is a need to glue the plinth at a temperature below +5 ° C, then the surfaces to be treated should be free of ice, frost and condensation.

Alternative solution for mounting ceramic plinth: "Ceresite" glue

Ceramic curb corner, like all other elements, can be installed using the tile glue "Ceresite". On a cement basis, a variety of CM 9 is made. This mixture is moisture-resistant. It has lowered frost resistance, freezes up to 2 times longer than other offers from the manufacturer.

After opening the container it is recommended to use the mixture for 2 hours. The temperature of the outside air during use should vary from +5 to +30 ° C, whereas air humidity should not rise above 80%. The element can be adjusted after installation within 15 minutes. Open time is 10 minutes. The element can slide 0.5 mm after installation. Wipe the joints in two days.

One of the most popular is the adhesive CM 11 Plus, which is suitable for laying tiles inside and outside the premises. This mixture is not afraid of moisture and frost, so it can be used in a cottage. Before using the mass, it must be ensured that the fillets have a water absorption of more than 3%. If you add an elasticizer to the composition, the adhesive can be used to install curbs with any water absorption.

Conclusion

Ceramic curb will be the most aesthetic solution for the bathroom. It looks noble, and can also be perfectly matched to the tile. Installation of this element should be conducted in several stages. The first involves the preparation of the base, the second involves the filling of the slits, while the third is the distribution of the glue and the formation of the corners. The final step will be the installation of curbs, which should be exhibited at the construction level.
