God of the sea in myths and legends

Myths of Ancient Rome and Greece tell readers the history of deities and heroes. They contain descriptions of the life of the gods of Olympus, Titans, sea gods, Cyclops, nymphs and other characters, for example, Hercules, Odysseus, Achilles, Jason, etc.

Pontus is a pre-Olympic Greek god who is the god of the seas of the interior. Pontos (other Greek) means the sea. He was the son of the goddess Gaia, who personified the earth and the god Ether (air). According to Hesiod, who wrote "The Theogony", Ponta gave birth to Gaia without a father.

The god of the sea Poseidon (other Greek) was also considered the god of earthquakes. Poseidon was the brother of Zeus and Hades, and was born of the Titanides of Rhea and the titan of Kronos, who were supreme deities.

Zeus, Hades and Poseidon divided domination accordingly over the sky, the underworld and the seas. The god of the sea lived with his wife Amphitrite in a beautiful palace at the bottom of the sea. When he swept in a chariot drawn by horses with long thick manes, and waved a trident, then the sea began a storm and the coastal rocks collapsed.

According to legend, the sea god Poseidon all the time challenged the primacy of Zeus, participated in conspiracies against him, for which he was punished by the service of the Trojan king Laomedonte. King Troy was a cunning liar. He did not bring the sacrifice promised to Poseidon, for which the god of the sea sent to the city of terrible monsters, devouring people.

The ancient Greek sculptures that have survived to this day depict a powerful, athletic-built Poseidon with a curly beard and a shock of curly hair. He has a trident in his hand.

The ancient Roman god of the sea is Neptune. On the images muscular Neptune with a crown on his head holds a trident and is identified with Poseidon. In his honor the planet of the solar system is called the blue giant. River and sea holidays are connected with Neptune. On the ships of the newcomers, young men and sailors are consecrated in a barrel or in seawater. Celebrate the day of the sea god on July 23rd.

Travelers, going on a journey, brought Neptune gifts, trying to propitiate him, so that there would be no storms and storms. Farmers revered Neptune for giving rain in the arid hot summer. There were built huts made of branches and leaves, in which people left offerings to the god, thus showing that they need protection from the scorching sun.

In Slavic mythology, the master of water is water. He lives in ponds and is considered dangerous for bathers and drinking water from people's wells, since he can drag them to the bottom. The water virgin becomes the wife of the water king.

The master of the water is portrayed as a glaucous old man with a big belly, a green beard and a mustache, with a fish tail.

On summer holidays related to water, the characters of the gods are always accompanied by characters of nymphs and mermaids.

The water spirits of nymphs are called naiads, nereids and oceanids. Naiads belong to forest and mountain springs, oceanids to the ocean, and Nereids to the sea.

Mermaids are mythological creatures, as a rule, the spirits of drowning girls or just spirits associated with reservoirs that serve water.

Until now, the images of mythological gods and spirits are alive in human memory, and holidays associated with their names are celebrated.
