Flag and coat of arms of Bulgaria: history

Official symbols of Bulgaria are signs of independence of the country and people. In ancient times, the symbol of the state, founded in the 7th century, was the tail of a horse. He always fluttered over the cavalry defending the interests of Bulgaria. After the passage of time, the pony tail was forgotten as a symbol. He was replaced by a lion - a sign of power, strength and power. Today the coat of arms of Bulgaria is depicted precisely with this predatory beast.

History of the Bulgarian flag

The current flag of Bulgaria we know as a canvas with a 3: 5 aspect ratio and horizontally placed strips of the same size. Their colors: red, green, white (bottom to top). But the flag was not always like that.

At the time of the Bulgarian Legation, in 1861-1862, a canvas with the same colors was created, as in modern, but arranged in a different order: green, white, red. It was this flag that was taken as the basis of the current symbol of the state. The creation of the first canvas is associated with the name of Georgy Rakovsky, leader of the revolutionary movement in Bulgaria. The movement created by him fought against the occupation of the state by the Turks. After the liberation of the territory from the Turkish invaders, in 1877, the present canvas was officially approved. Many changes were made in Bulgaria. The flag and the coat of arms changed along with the history of the state.

Value of colors

The official designation of colors on the Bulgarian national symbol is not described in the documents. But their significance is known: white color symbolizes freedom and peace, green - nature, forests and agriculture on the territory of the state, red - the blood that spilled during the struggle for independence. Also of great importance is the coat of arms of Bulgaria.

In a broadcast on the Bulgarian radio in 2008, it was said that ribbons of the same colors that are used on the canvas of the modern flag were tied to the spears of the soldiers of the ancient army of this country. White was a symbol of a light and maneuverable left flank, green - elite regiments, red - cavalry right flank. These data may also have been taken into account when choosing colors for the official flag.

The Times of the USSR

Since the creation of the flag has not changed. Only in the days of the Soviet Union on the canvas, in the upper left corner, the coat of arms of Bulgaria was displayed. After the collapse of the USSR, it was removed, in accordance with the laws of the newly formed state. In place of him came the real coat of arms of Bulgaria. Photos of these historical events can be found in the archives of the country or state museums.

History of the Bulgarian coat of arms

The officially adopted coat of arms is a red shield with a golden lion on it with a crown. Above the shield is the state crown, and on the sides there are two also crowned lions holding it. There are symbols of the strength and power of the state on the branches of oak with acorns. On the branches is a ribbon with an inscription in Bulgarian "Unity gives strength." These words are the motto of the Bulgarian soldiers. It is unofficially believed that three lions on the coat of arms designate the lands of the republic, united under the same state symbols: Macedonia, Thrace, Moesia. The coat of arms of Bulgaria was catchy and memorable.

In the days of the Soviet Union there was no crown, instead of it there was a red star. And under the lion there was a gear. Instead of the lion shields, on the sides there were sheaves of wheat, tied with a ribbon, on which the date of the founding of the People's Republic of Bulgaria was indicated . Bulgaria experienced many events. The coat of arms, whose importance has changed depending on the authorities, has remained unchanged since 1997. It was officially approved, it can be seen today.
