ENT surgery (otorhinolaryngology)

According to statistics, diseases of the ENT organs are among the most widespread in the world. Runny nose, cough, inflammation of the tonsils, otitis - we all faced these problems, and sometimes repeatedly. In most cases, ENT diseases are successfully treatable, so we often think of them as "non-serious" diseases. However, do not underestimate the potential danger of ENT diseases. After all, it also happens that conservative treatment does not give the desired result, in such cases, the only way to treat the so-called "non-serious" disease can be surgical intervention.

And indeed, many do not know that in addition to common colds, otorhinolaryngologists often face the need for ENT surgery. Moreover, the branch of otolaryngology is sufficiently developed and due to modern achievements of microsurgery and other branches of medicine it often intersects with such directions as oncology and plastic surgery.

Here are just some of the ENT diseases, the treatment of which may require surgical intervention:

  • Chronic tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils)
  • Deformation of the nasal septum (which leads to a disruption of nasal breathing)
  • Vasomotor rhinitis
  • Sinusitis of the maxillary or frontal sinuses
  • Polyposis sinusitis
  • Chronic otitis media
  • Damage to the tympanic membrane
  • Snore

Treatment of ENT organs is performed with the help of various surgical procedures. The most common ENT-operations for today:

  • Tonsillectomy (tonsillectomy)
  • Polypectomy (removal of polyps)
  • Adenoidectomy (removal of adenoids)
  • Thyroidectomy (thyroidectomy)
  • Removal of cysts and hematomas
  • Septoplasty (correction of nasal septum)
  • Hymorotomy (opening of the maxillary sinus)
  • Cochlear implantation (installation of a device for hearing restoration)
  • Treatment of snoring
  • Rhinoplasty (plastic surgery of the nose)
  • Plastic surgery of the auricle

During ENT surgery, specialists use the latest achievements in medicine and technology, modern methods of visualization and the latest equipment. At the present time, ENT doctors use four basic methods of performing surgical operations: endoscopic, laser, radio wave and shayver. The most common of these is endoscopic, in which surgical intervention is performed by means of an endoscope through a small hole. The main advantage of this method is that there is no need to make an incision. This reduces the traumatic nature of the procedure, and shortens the recovery period.

Radio wave ENT surgery involves exposure to organs by a radio wave, which creates a relatively small incision. This procedure practically does not leave scarring and minimizes postoperative discomfort.

Laser ENT surgery is also less traumatic and is conducted without blood under local anesthesia. This method allows you to keep healthy tissues located near a site that is susceptible to laser exposure.

The shaver method of surgical intervention consists in using a special instrument (shaver, or microdender) with cutting tips in the form of a hollow tube to the blade at the end. The removal of tissues is made during the rotation of this blade. This method allows you to remove pathological tissue without damaging healthy areas. Most often, shader surgery is used to perform operations in the nasal cavity and in the nasopharynx.

Recently, reconstructive and plastic operations of ENT organs have become increasingly popular. Most often, they are carried out to repair injuries resulting from various types of injuries, or to correct congenital cosmetic deficiencies.

Despite numerous achievements, progress in the field of otorhinolaryngology does not stand still. Scientists do not cease to improve existing technologies, and also to invent new even more effective methods of treating ENT organs.
