Emo subculture and other youth movements

Subculture (youth) - a fairly common cultural phenomenon, which has its own characteristics. Most often its participants are young people, who are characterized by an unbalanced emotional state with unstable personal parameters. Detailed study of the phenomenon of subculture, we can conclude that its adherents see it as a way of self-expression, and the fact that most species focuses on external attributes, most likely, means a shallow understanding by participants of their own mental needs. Therefore, they find the elements of clothing and style a suitable way of manifesting themselves in society.

What is a subculture?

First of all, this is the subject of study of cultural studies, sociology and anthropology. Let us turn to the definition of David Riesman, who first introduced the notion of a subculture, where by it is meant a group of people who purposely select certain values and style of clothing, behavior and thinking, to which the public minority resorts.

From this we can assume that social norms and values do not suit this category, therefore in a subculture people with rebellious behavior are more often associated with internal aggression, as they intend to express their behavior, clothes and thinking about themselves in a clear way.

Youth subculture is, first of all, a certain cultural niche, the adherents of which are defined by age: from 14 to 30 years. The specific character of youth psychology determines the character of most types of youth subcultures: the radical values, bright self-expression with the help of attributes and high emotionality, the division of the world into "black" and "white" and society into "gray mass" and vivid individualities.

Subculture of fashion

The fifties of the twentieth century were marked by the emergence of one of the most common subcultures, which then spawned several others. They were fashion - young British, who paid great attention to their distinctive appearance. One of the most radical subcultures that emerged as a branch of modism is skinheads.

Style mods attribute was originally narrow Italian costumes. They were distinguished by their love of music: rock'n'roll, jazz, ska, soul and rhythm and blues. The attitude of the society toward this direction was, to a large extent, negative: this can be seen from the reviews of the movie Quadrofenia, whose story tells about the life of fashion - a simple courier who spends his life wasted: on drugs, pills and parties. Nevertheless, in 2004, one of the rating magazines made the film a list of the greatest British films.

The main transport modes were scooters, they spent time together with like-minded people at seaside resorts and nightclubs, where often there were clashes between them and representatives of another subculture - rockers.

Ten years after the appearance, this movement has become less popular.

Emo subculture

This subculture was formed from a musical style. The society reacted ambiguously to the emergence of this movement, in Russia the boom occurred at the beginning of the 2000s, and this phenomenon was often discussed in the media, and then at the state level.

  • Emo subculture and attitude. First and foremost, emo-cyds emphasized that they express emotions. Positions taken by emo are a struggle for justice and sensual attitude. Most people have formed the view that they are psychologically weak, whiny young people who romanticize death: it is difficult to say whether this estimate is true, but the number of suicides among the young population at that time has increased, and this fact does not contradict such an idea of emo-qidah. Representatives of the subculture are introverted, immersed in depressive states, or, conversely, into unjustified joy. This is a clear evidence of mental instability and it is not surprising that the public was negative about the development of emo culture. They were often correlated with the Goths, which is incorrect: on one of the sites devoted to emo, summed up the line: "emo hate themselves, the Goths hate everyone."
  • Emo subculture: clothing and image. Emo-kikes wore slanting torn bangs covering half the face, hair was painted black, and tunnels were made in the ears. On the face they applied cosmetics to both sexes: they toned the face and lips with light color. Nails covered with black lacquer. The main combination of colors in clothes: pink, white, black.
  • Emo subculture: attributes. A large number of colorful icons attached to clothes and mailing bags, large glasses with dark glasses, bright bracelets and wristbands.
