Is the mentality something unchangeable?

The meaning of the word "mentality" can be defined as a worldview, perception of the world. It is believed that this is something embedded in a person by his environment. For example, very much in the worldview is determined by belonging to a certain nationality. The environment also affects a person. There is a mentality of great generality, for example, the national mentality. The representative of each nationality has its own characteristics, which are expressed not only in its values, but also in the mode of life. A typical feature of the American mentality is the desire for a certain social status and material prosperity. A Russian person has other values, that's why his way of life is completely different.

If you look at how emigrants live in a foreign country, then here you can see a more motley picture. Some of them continue to adhere to the same standards of life as at home. Others change fast enough. Someone thinks that the mentality is something unchangeable. Is it so? The most striking example of the change is emigration to the United States. New values are taken pretty quickly. Nevertheless, we can note one more aspect of this phenomenon: people usually move to America, who are already striving for a new life. They are ready for change. Their worldview long before the move was prepared. A part of emigrants at the same time remains to live among people of their nationality. Mentality is not just a world view of large groups. After all, there is, for example, such a concept as a criminal mentality. It expresses the world view of a certain group of people. In this case, often such groups are part of larger communities. Despite the fact that there is something in common between criminals of any nationality, between them, however, there are also great differences.

To say unequivocally that mentality is a verdict is impossible. Especially if it is not a national outlook. People change. In particular, the events that occur with a person can influence the perception of the world and values. Just a couple of decades ago, the Soviet world view was the norm. Today it is atavism. If a person does not change, then he stops moving forward. After living a few years in a foreign country, the emigrant will no longer be the same as he came to her. One can only say that the mentality does not change completely. Especially when it comes to national character traits that are inherent in a particular ethnic group for centuries.

They can only be changed over several generations. So, for example, the descendants of the first emigrants in the United States changed. The first of them consciously accepted certain values, which gradually became part of the nature of their descendants. Psychologists say that a person is 80% programmed by the environment and only 20% hereditary. The most interesting is that an individual can control himself and determine his own character, paying attention to one thing and not reacting to others. Any society can have both positive and successful representatives, and outsiders. The desire for success lies in every human individual. However, some realize themselves, while others use inefficient behavior programs.

Mentality is something that can be adjusted in the same way as bad heredity. Character is something that is created by habits. Changing their habits and thinking, a person becomes completely different. Of course, one who believes that nothing can be changed, most likely, is right. Because he will not even try to do anything. The one who accepts fate as something external, creates problems for himself. After all, life goes on, and if you do not change anything, you can get random results.
