Solomon's Wise Court

Before we understand and define the meaning and meaning of the expression "Solomon's court", we shall plunge into the most ancient history and turn to the Bible for help in order to find out who Solomon was and how he became so famous. And here it should immediately be noted that the name Solomon (Shlomo) is translated from Hebrew as "peacemaker".

King Solomon

Solomon was the third Jewish king, whose reign dates from about 967-928 BC. He was the son of King David and Bathsheba. Even at birth, the prophet Nathan singled him out of all the sons of David, who later became the most intelligent and dispassionate ruler. It was he who built the First Jerusalem Temple on Mount Zion. He had a talent for foresight and was very sensitive, so many legends and fairy tales are associated with his name.

Solomon's court has always been fair and wise. There is a tradition that when God, having appeared to him in a dream, promised to fulfill any of his desires, Solomon asked himself the heart of the rational to judge his people correctly and be able to distinguish between good and evil. Solomon became a peaceful king, for forty years of his rule there was not a single great war. He was an excellent diplomat, merchant and builder, with him appeared in the Jewish army chariots, cavalry and merchant fleet. He strengthened and rebuilt his Jerusalem, which began to sink in luxury and wealth. King Solomon made silver equivalent to simple stones.

The price of disobedience

But, like any king, he also made mistakes, and so after his death the state disintegrated. One of the reasons was the building of the kings and pagan idols for their numerous wives, who were often from different races and religions. He even swore to participate personally in some pagan cults.

In the oral torus Midrash it is described that when King Solomon married the daughter of the Egyptian pharaoh, then the archangel Gabriel came down from heaven to earth and stuck his pole into the sea abyss, in this place later Rome was built, which later will conquer Jerusalem.

In the biblical Book of Kings it is said that at the end of life, God appeared again before Solomon and told him that he would tear off his kingdom from him, since he did not fulfill his covenants and statutes, but in life he would not do it because of his father David. After the death of Solomon, his once powerful and powerful kingdom fell apart into two weak states, Israel and Judah, which began to fight among themselves.

Solomon's court: the meaning

There is such a popular expression in the people - "Solomon's court" or "Solomon's decision". It implies a quick, witty and at the same time unexpected solution that helps deftly get out of some difficult and very controversial situation. This phraseology "the court of Solomon" is used in the sense of "fast and wise."

Examples of Solomon's wise decisions

Once Solomon began to judge two women who could not share the baby among themselves. They lived in the same house, and almost at the same time they were born by the baby. At night one of the women slept her baby, and he died. Then she took from another living child and shifted her dead to her. The next morning a fierce dispute arose between the women. So they came to court to Solomon. He, after listening to their story, ordered to cut the child in half and distribute the halves to mothers. One of the women immediately decided: it will be better if he does not get to anyone. Another begged not to kill the baby, and immediately allowed her to take the child to another woman, so long as he remained alive. Having determined in her a real mother, King Solomon immediately ordered to give the child to this woman.

Help of the pharaoh

One day Solomon married Pharaoh's daughter when he built the Holy of Holies, a temple to his Lord, and somehow decided to send an ambassador to the father-in-law with a request to help him. Pharaoh immediately sent six hundred people to help Solomon, who died on a horoscope. Thus, he wanted to experience the wisdom of the Israeli king. Solomon, seeing them from afar, ordered them to sew them shrouds, and then put his ambassador to them and told the father-in-law that if he had nothing to bury his dead, then here are their robes and let them bury them.

Solomon's trial of three brothers

A dying father called his three sons to give his last orders concerning the inheritance. They came to him, and he told them that he had buried a treasure somewhere in the earth, there are three vessels standing on top of each other. Let the upper vessel be given to the elder, the next to the middle one, and the lower one to the younger one. When the father died, they unearthed the treasure and saw that the first vessel was filled with gold, the second bones, and the third earth. The brothers began to argue in horror for the gold and could not share it. Then they decided to come to Solomon, so that he rightly resolved their hereditary dispute.

Solomon's court, as always, was very wise, he ordered gold to be given to his elder brother, cattle and medium servants, and vineyards, breads and fields to the younger. And he told them that their father was an intelligent man, since he had so competently divided everything between them already during his lifetime.
