Elegance, aristocratism, greatness and beauty are the first epithets that come to the person who heard the phrase "German Great Dane". And really, confident to become, long mighty legs, a head resembling an elegant antique statue, distinguish this breed from the general mass. The Great Dane is distinguished by his playfulness and mobility, and this breed is quite easily yielded to training, not to mention the fact that this giant is able to become an excellent watchman and bodyguard. Despite its size, this dog is quite peaceful with respect to small children and pets.

Standard of the Great Dane

The constitution of the Great Dane must be dry, with a strong musculature, the skeleton is well developed, and the skin is elastic, but not sagging, forming folds.

The height of males at the withers should exceed 80 centimeters, in females this standard is lower by 10 centimeters. Sacrum in both sexes should be below the withers for a couple of centimeters. As for sexual dimorphism, it is quite pronounced: the males are larger and more massive.

The weight of dogs varies from 54 to 90 kg in males, and from 45 to 65 kg in females.

The head is noticeably elongated, with a characteristic sharp forehead transition into the nose. Jaws developed, but not protruding. Eyes dark, have almond shape.

There are several basic colors of wool: black, fawn (varies from ocher to light-red), marble (snow-white base color with black spots all over the body), brindle (fawn with black stripes), blue (gray, Mouse).

The coat is short, thick, without undercoat.

The tail is highly planted, saber-like, thinning from the base to the tip.

Features of behavior

Mastiff German is a social dog, which is why it perfectly fits in families with children. However, it should be remembered that, in addition, this breed requires special treatment. Firstly, puppies of the Great Dane, as well as adult dogs, need a special diet and certain physical exertion, not to mention the need to closely monitor their health. And secondly, the representatives of this breed need constant attention from the owner, which in the case of unforeseen separation will be very boring.

The mastiff German can be well trained, however it is very difficult to retrain it. A properly designed training program is able to prepare this dog for almost any kind of activity. However, the best dog German shows up as a guard of a person and his property.
