The Chechen Republic consists of five cities and three villages. In addition to them, there are about 200 villages, among which there are officially abandoned. The cities of Chechnya differ in the number of people. In the first place is Grozny, it has more than 200 thousand people. The rest strongly lag behind it, being cities with a population of less than 60 thousand people. However, the number of people is growing every year. It is possible that in ten years the republic will become one with more than 1 million people.

Shawls

The city of Shali is located 40 kilometers southeast of Grozny. The official status he received in 1990. The basis of the Shali was promoted by the overthrow of the Tatar-Mongol yoke in the distant XIV century and the expulsion from the lands of Dagestan landowners, proteges of the Golden Horde. Despite military events, the city's population is steadily growing and in 2016 it was more than 52 thousand people, most of them Chechen by nationality. Shali is located far from the railway routes. And the city is connected by bus only to Grozny. Modern Shali rebuilt after the Chechen military operations.

Urus-Martan

Second after the capital of Grozny, the city by population in Chechnya. At the beginning of 2016, it was home to over 57 thousand people. Like some other cities in Chechnya, this one is very near the capital. Located 30 kilometers south of Grozny, on the Martan River. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, Urus-Martan was a village where there was no industry. The main attraction of the city is the ethnographic open-air museum "Dondi-Yurt". It recreates the atmosphere of the Chechen aul of the past centuries with unique objects of everyday life that gathered around the whole region.

The main street of the city bears the name of the president of the republic - AA. Kadyrov. Many cities of Chechnya have areas named after scientists or other well-known and influential people.

Gudermes

At present the city is the most important transport hub of the North Caucasus. Through it passes the highway to Baku, in the opposite direction it can be reached in Moscow. Railway communication Gudermes is connected with the largest cities of the region. It is the construction of the railway station and the necessity of the servicing of its employees, and the fact of the emergence of the city is conditioned. In place of the village was broken working village, later in 1941 it received the status of the city. Among the population are predominant representatives of Chechen nationality, those in the city according to the census over 95%. Previously, the cities of Chechnya were also inhabited by Russians, but during armed conflicts they all tried to leave the territory of the republic.
