Belogorsky fortress: characteristics of the inhabitants

In 1836 in the journal Sovremennik was published a historical story of AS. Pushkin's "The Captain's Daughter", whose action takes place during the terrible years of the Pugachev uprising in 1773-1775. The writer in his works repeatedly turned to historical topics, trying to find answers to the questions of the present in the events of the past. Arrival of Peter Grinev to Belogorsky Fortress

The protagonist of the story is an officer. He was sent to military service in one of the most remote corners of the country. Belogorsky fortress was located in the steppe and at first seemed to the young man a real wilderness, where he was destined to vegetate in boredom and inaction. The area seemed dull and unprepossessing to him, as it resembled not a military garrison, but a poor village.

However, the first acquaintance with its inhabitants changed the idea of Petr Andreevich about his place of work. Indeed, in the story "Captain's Daughter" Belogorsky Fortress in the life of Grinev played a big role: it was here that he met his love, went through terrible trials, but did not lose his honor and remained faithful to the Empress. The captain of the garrison was Ivan Mironov, a good-natured and artless man, who treated his subordinates well, respected his wife Vasilissa Egorovna, and loved her only daughter, Marya Ivanovna. His wife not only managed home affairs, but also took an active part in leading the military.

The Belogorsky fortress was perceived by her as an economy, and therefore she skillfully coped not only with her functions, but also with her husband's problems in the military. Vasilisa Yegorovna enjoyed general respect among the inhabitants and had a strict but fair woman's reputation. The image of this heroine - one of the most successful in the story.

Masha Mironova

The main character is the captain's daughter, Marya Ivanovna, a simple girl without education and manners. However, her sensitivity and kindness immediately attracted Peter Grinev, who found her intelligent and judicious. Thanks to this sympathy Belogorsky fortress no longer seemed boring to him, on the contrary, he quickly got used to a new life and began to find in it a lot of positive things.

The hero's love for Masha Mironova, of course, largely determined his attitude toward his existence in the garrison. At a time when both hoped to get married, Peter Grinev was full of hopes for the future and believed in a happy fate. However, after his father's refusal to marry the hero completely lost his taste for life, and Belogorsky fortress began to seem empty and dull to him.

From the very beginning, he produces an unpleasant impression, which is subsequently confirmed by his attempts to interfere with the relationship between Peter and Masha. He maliciously and sarcastically ridicules captain Mironov and Vasilis Yegorovna, insults Masha, dishonestly hurts in the duel of Grinev, taking advantage of the fact that he was distracted by Savelyitch. He changes his oath and goes over to Pugachev's side, and finally gives false testimony against his former rival at the trial.

Another impression is produced by secondary characters - servants of the Mironovs: Ivan Ignatievich, an old invalid who, however, refused to recognize Pugachev as sovereign, for which he was hanged, and the maid Palashka, who helps her mistress Marya Ivanovna in difficult moments. These heroes, as it were, set off the image of the Belogorsky fortress, showing that simple but honest and noble people live in the very backwoods of the country.

General characteristics of the garrison

The place of service of Peter Grinev plays an important role in the narrative: it is here that all the most important events in his life take place. Here he witnessed the terrible reprisal of Pugachev over Captain Mironov, Ivan Ignatievich, Vasilisa Yegorovna. He himself narrowly escaped death and, on a strange coincidence, made friends with Pugachev.

At this point, he rushed to save Masha Mironov from Shvabrin, once again exposed to the danger of being executed by rebels. Here fate again brought him with Pugachev, who this time also helped him to release the bride. In the fortress Grinev finally explained to Marya Ivanovna about their forthcoming marriage. Here he forever said goodbye to Pugachev in order to see him after a while on the scaffold. Belogorskaya fortress, the description of which was presented in this essay, played a decisive role in the fate of Peter Grinev.
