Until now, researchers of the history of the breed can not come to an unambiguous conclusion about how the first barbets appeared on the territory of France. Some believe that they were brought by the Moorish conquerors. Others are sure that Portuguese seafarers brought the animals.

The dog breed was very popular until the end of the 19th century. Later, interest in these animals began to fade, and the number of representatives of the breed decreased markedly. However, in the seventies of the last century the breed survived its second birth. Nevertheless, today, these pretty animals can rarely be found even on the streets of France or at a dog show.

Description of the breed barbet

Such an unusual four-legged friend differs from many of his brethren with a long felt-like coat, which needs daily careful care. Otherwise, it will fall down, stray into coils, curl up in laces.

Males of this breed grow up to 65 cm at the withers, and bitches - up to 61 cm. The standard allows a deviation of 1 cm in both directions. Weigh males up to 28 kg, bitches - not more than 17 kg.
