Russia boasts a few cities with a thousand-year history of its existence. One of these settlements is on the banks of the mighty river Don, and in 5 decades it will celebrate a thousand years from the day of its foundation. He always occupied an important strategic and geographical position and played a significant role in the history of Russia and abroad. This is the city of Azov. We will consider the attractions of Azov in our article.

The only one in Russia

In Azov there is a unique landmark, which is the only monument in the whole country of the engineering and military art of the era of Catherine II. This is the Powder Cellar. The sights of Azov in general, and the cellar in particular, are studied for many years by different historians. LB Perepachaev, a scientific worker of the museum-reserve, is engaged in research of this object.

Until 1797, the cellar served as a room in which barrels of gunpowder and shells were stored. A little later a cellar of red brick was erected. At that time this building had an unprecedented design. Thus, the building was a rectangular structure, to which an entrance vestibule was attached. The walls of the building made it unique. These are double partitions with built-in ventilation ducts between them . They were connected with windows through the use of prod- ucts.

The Azov Peter I

In the city on Petrovsky Boulevard a monument to Peter the Great rises . Many of Azov's sights are dedicated to one or another historical person. This object perpetuates the above-mentioned monarch. Monument to Peter the Great was established in 1996. The sculpture was cast at Mytishchi Plant of Artistic Casting. The material was chosen bronze. The height of Peter's figure reaches three meters. Ruler mounted on a two-meter solid pedestal made of granite.

The statue looks like this: the commander leans his hand on the mortar. Sculptors portrayed Peter the Great at about the age of 20-22 years. Inexperienced, but knowing what he wants, the king with a stern face turned his gaze to the fortress.

General excursion

But ahead of us waiting for the most interesting attractions. The city of Azov has another pride - these are architectural structures that are located in the historic district of the settlement. It is here that one of its highlights is located - the surviving ruins of the popular Azov fortress: Alekseevsky Gate, a fragment of the Genoese wall, a Powder cellar, a moat and ramparts.

On the Moscow street you can also find some of Azov's sights. For example, a paleontological and archaeological museum-preserve. The main building of the object is housed in an ancient charming building, which, incidentally, is an architectural landmark. The museum exhibits a magnificent collection of Sarmatian gold, the skeletons of the Trogonteri (their age is 600 thousand years), various archaeological finds, the skeleton of the dinotheria, which is about eight million years old, and numismatic collections. Not every world-famous museum can boast of such exhibits. The institution has a scientific library, the fund of which is more than 20 thousand books.

Torpedo boat

Sights of Azov with addresses are described in our review. But there is another object in this city, which I would like to draw the attention of tourists - it's a torpedo boat.

In 1941, an enemy naval landing threatened to land in the Taganrog Bay. To protect the Azov and Don, during 1941-1942 in the city was based a separate Don detachment of the Azov flotilla. It consisted of armored boats, gunboats, armored train and other military equipment. But the basis of the fleet was torpedo boats. They were vessels like Komsomolets. Until July 1942, the detachment heroically resisted the fascists. After that the boats were transported to Novorossiysk.

The monument is a torpedo boat, which was mounted on a pedestal of concrete. The vessel arrived at its destination on its own.
