Art Museum, Sochi: description, exposition, opening hours

The Art Museum (Sochi) has been operating since 1988 and is housed in a building with a unique architecture reminiscent of Greek temples. The collection has more than one and a half thousand paintings and objects with high artistic value.

History

The Art Museum (Sochi) is based on the base of the City Exhibition Hall, where works of fine art were exhibited. The building was erected in 1936, according to the project of the outstanding architect I.V. Zholtovsky. For many years the administration housed the Gorkom of the CPSU.

Since 1971, the premises have been given for a museum exposition, in order to preserve art values and the history of the city of Sochi. In 1972, reconstruction began, the building received a federal status of a monument of architecture. During the period of restoration work, scientific and exhibition activities continued.

In 1988, according to the order of the Ministry of Culture, the Exhibition Hall was transformed into the Art Museum. To date, the territory of the museum covers an area of about 0.67 hectares, for the permanent exposition halls 1537 square meters have been given, the storage facilities occupy 200 square meters. The building, decorated with a portico with columns at the entrance, has three floors with high ceilings and spacious exposition halls, which feature unique works of fine art.

The Art Museum (Sochi) has a collection of 5,054 items of storage, paintings in different genres, techniques and manner, characteristic for the time in which they were created and showcase the best works of artists - witnesses of history. The chronology of materials begins from the 2nd century and comes to our days, paintings and objects of applied art of different centuries are collected.

Permanent exhibition

The Art Museum (Sochi) carries out exhibition activities in all manner of diversity. Permanent exhibition consists of sections:

  • Russian art of the period 19-21 centuries. In the exposition there are canvases of such masters as I.K. Aivazovsky, V.D. Polenov, I.I. Shishkin, V.I. Zarubin and others.
  • Silver and cold steel of the period of antiquity. The basis of the section is the archaeological finds discovered during the excavations conducted in the upper reaches of the Mzymta River. The materials found were combined under the common name - "Mzymtinsky treasure". It included household items, weapons, horse harness, made of silver and other metals, with a rich delicate decor. Most belong to the Sarmatian and Greek peoples inhabiting the Black Sea.
  • Painting of the 20th century, where the pictures are combined with the theme "Russian expanses". A large collection of paintings in various techniques of performance, reflecting the beauty of Russian nature.
  • Graphics of 19-21 centuries. In the exhibition hall are the works of V.A. Serov "The Woman's Portrait", B.М. Kustodiev "Seated Nude," several watercolor works by M.K. Sokolov and other artists.

Exhibitions

Every month the Art Museum (Sochi) holds exhibitions and other cultural events. Usually, active activities begin with the advent of the tourist season in the city. In the past, 2016, residents and guests were invited to thematic vernissages, such as "Your whole back is white. Based on P. Kulinich's works ", where O. Hirsanova's photo works were shown, timed to the Day of Laughter. Also in May the Kuban Museum Festival was held and the performance "Museum masterpieces" was organized. May 24 was the All-Russian Design Forum and other events.

The cost of visiting the permanent exposition is 100 rubles, discounts are provided for privileged categories of citizens (schoolchildren, students, pensioners).

  • On weekdays (Mon.-Fri), and also on Sunday - from 10:00 to 17:30.
  • On Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00,
