137 Airborne Regiment, Ryazan: features, composition and leadership

Among all the branches of the armed forces in the Russian Armed Forces, the command is placing high hopes on the airborne troops, which have already proved their effectiveness in performing various combat missions. During the conflict in Afghanistan, Chechnya and other hot spots, the Ryazan 137th Airborne Regiment particularly distinguished itself.

Ryazan - the capital of the paratroopers

This city can rightly be considered the center of the airborne forces. In Ryazan, there are a number of institutions that are directly related to these troops:

  • Higher Command School of the Airborne Forces. V.F. Margelova.
  • Museum of the Airborne Forces.
  • The monument to the first paratrooper Army General Margelov V.F. (Located on the central square of the city).

Ryazan is a city in which large holidays are celebrated simultaneously. It 's City Day, Ilya 's Prophet's Day and Airborne's Day.

When was the 137th Airborne Regiment created?

Ryazan has excellent conditions for training the airborne troops. In 1948, on the basis of the 347th Ryazan Parachute Guards Regiment (PAP), a landing airborne regiment was created. In 1949, he was renamed the Guards 137th PDP.

In 1997, the 137th Airborne Regiment (Ryazan) was awarded the honor of being called the Kuban Cossack Regiment and was awarded the Order of the Red Star. The unit is part of the 106th Red Banner Guards Airborne Division. Its headquarters are stationed in Tula. The military units are located in such cities as Tula, Narofominsk and Ryazan.

Events in Nagorno-Karabakh

137th regiment of the Airborne Forces (Ryazan) was used to destroy bandit groups and establish public order among other units. 1980 was the beginning of a difficult period in the life of the country. In 1988, a movement for reunification with Armenia arose in Nagorno-Karabakh . Azerbaijan was stirred by a series of rallies and demonstrations, which ended in bloody clashes. After the tragic events in Sumgait, general terror and destruction, the previously prosperous industrial city was on the verge of an economic and technological catastrophe. The Soviet leadership decided to enlist the 137th Airborne Regiment (Ryazan) to resolve the conflict. The commander of the unit, Lieutenant-Colonel V. Khatskevich, after the landing of the regiment near the city of Baku, sent troops to carry out the assigned task (neutralization of bandit groups). After the completion of the combat mission, the regiment returned to the city of Ryazan.

Military operations in Grozny

The first and second Chechen campaigns did not ignore the Ryazan regiment. Lieutenant Colonel G. Yurchenko (commander) in November 1994 received an assignment to arrive in Grozny. And on New Year's Eve of 1995 the order to break into the area of the railway station was followed. The 131st motorized rifle brigade was surrounded there. The commanders of the two amphibious companies, Koshelev and Teplinsky, decided to consolidate themselves in the five-story buildings closest to the station. From there, an attack was launched on the militants. The Ryazan regiment became a cover for the Russian armored group, which attacked the bandits from the back of the station. Resistance terrorists did not last long. In January 1995, the regiment of the Airborne Forces launched an assault on the five-story building occupied by militants. Commanded a paratroop squad captain Alexander Borisevich. Since the "spirits" were already ready for an airborne attack, this battle for the 137th Regiment proved to be very difficult. Victory for Russian airborne troops was not easy: seven soldiers were injured.

Who is proud of the regiment?

During the counter-terrorist operation in Chechnya in 1994, the 137th regiment of the Airborne Forces (Ryazan) distinguished itself among the units that fought there. The leadership in the fighting gave an example of courage to their subordinates.

Lieutenant Colonels Svyatoslav Golubyatnikov and Gleb Yurchenko, Major A. Silin, captains Alexander Borisevich and Mikhail Teplinsky became Heroes of Russia. The entire landing battalion, which took part in the "station battle", was presented to the Order of Courage. One of the paratroopers, Igor Potapov, who lost his legs in Chechnya, remained in the army and serves in the peacekeeping contingent in Kosovo, which once again proved his right to such a high award. During the entire period of the existence of this regiment, 700 fighters were awarded with the prizes of the Motherland.
