Windows 10, setting up the Start menu: procedure, instructions

Windows 10 differs from its predecessors not only in functional features, but also in the concept of setting up the main menu "Start", which has undergone drastic changes. Now it will be considered how to change the Start menu in Windows 10 and configure it for you. In addition to the main issues, attention will be paid to some critical errors and problems that may arise during the use of certain features of the tenth version of Windows.

How did the "Start" in Windows 10 change ?

Even a cursory look at the menu opened by pressing the "Start" button allows you to immediately conclude that it combines the classic look and elements of the Metro interface that appeared in Windows 8.

On the one hand, you can use the usual navigation, which, however, sorts the programs only in alphabetical order, on the other - on the right side there is a set of tiles for quick access to frequently used applications or programs that developers think the user needs every day.

This approach suits not all users, so they are trying to resolve the issue of how to change the Start menu in Windows 10. This can be done in several ways and in several key ways. If you want, you can go back to either the classic view (Windows 7) or use the same Metro interface (Windows 8).

Windows 10. Customize the Start menu: add or remove items

Consider the installation of parameters for a more comfortable use of elements, starting with the simplest - adding and removing some elements in the main window.

In Windows 10, the setup of the Start menu in this view is made in the simplest way. To add an item, you need to find it in the list of programs and use the right click to open the context menu, where when going to additional parameters there is a line for attaching the application icon to the initial screen (after that the tile will appear in the corresponding location on the right). In order to remove a fixed element, you need to use the same right click on the tile, but select the line of the detachment.

Adjust the size of the window and the displayed items

For Windows 10, setting up the Start menu also means changing the size of the called window. In the simplest case, you need to proceed in the classical way by setting the cursor on the corner or at the edges of the window and pulling them to resize the window with the mouse while holding the left button.

There is another option for resizing. In Windows 10, the "Start" menu can also be customized by calling the personalization settings (right click on an empty spot on the screen and select the appropriate line in the submenu). In the parameter setting window, you need to select the start section and set the switch to display the full-screen mode when the menu is called up.

Here, if desired, you can enable or disable the visualization of newly installed or used programs, frequently used applications, and so on.

Changing the color scheme

It will not be difficult to change the color scheme of the menu. In the same section of personalization, a color string is selected, after which automatic selection is disabled. Further in the presented palette it is necessary to specify only the color and to apply adjustments.

By default, the color will be set only on tiles, but if you turn on the color display in the menu, the notification center and the taskbar, it will be set for all items. In addition, followers of the Windows 7 interface can use the inclusion of a semi-transparent view.

Prohibition of updating tiles

Notifications in the menu is good. However, many users constant reminders, to put it mildly, are annoying. They can be disabled.

To do this, you need to right-click on the tile to call up an additional menu and select from it the point of disconnecting live tiles. After setting such parameters, annoying user notifications will not bother anymore. For all categories of parameters, the question of how to save the settings of the Start menu of Windows 10 is resolved quite simply - the usual confirmation of the changes with the "OK" buttons. If desired, in the personalization section, you can save the selected scheme.

Return to Metro and Windows 7 View

For those who for some reason do not like the innovation, there is a possibility to return to the old interfaces. As for the classic look, it's just impossible to go to it. To do this, you must manually delete all tiles in the menu. Only then will the program section remain.

To return to the Metro interface, you need to apply the full-screen display settings of the Start menu, as described above.

What should I do if the Start menu does not work in Windows 10?

Now the most sad thing. When switching to the tenth version, many users stop working button start, and the menu does not open at all. In Windows 10, a critical error in the Start menu is fixed by several methods, of which the main ones are restarting the Explorer.exe process, which is responsible for the graphical interface of the system, using PowerShell tools, creating another account, and editing the corresponding system registry keys.

To start, go to the "Task Manager" by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del or enter taskmgr in the "Run" console and find the explorer.exe in the process tree . Right click on the additional menu and use the restart line. You can also use the same button on the bottom right. But this method does not always help.

The problem may be not only that the "Start" menu does not work in Windows 10. Even the start button is inactive. In this case, you should refer to the system tool called PowerShell. You can find the executable file in the program folder that is located in the System32 directory, but it's better to do this by calling the service from the "Run" menu (powershell command) or by running it in the same way from the "Task Manager". It goes without saying that this operation should be performed exclusively with the rights of the administrator.

Next, the console writes the line Get-appxpackage -all * shellexperience * -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($ _. Installlocation + "\ appxmetadata \ appxbundlemanifest.xml")}, and when the command is completed, the button and The menu itself will work.

If this option does not help, you can try to create another account with admin rights, using the corresponding section of the standard "Control Panel", which you can access most quickly by entering the control command in the "Run" console. Then you just have to enter the system under it. But it is inconvenient.

Finally, the button and the Start menu can be brought to life through the system registry, which is called by the regedit command in the "Run" menu. Here you need to use the HKLU branch, in which you go down the folder tree through the SOFTWARE and Microsoft section to the Explorer directory where the Abdanced folder is located. On the right there is an EnableXAMLStartMenu key, whose value should be changed to zero. If there is no such key in the list, you first need to create the DWORD parameter, and then assign it a name and set the appropriate value. After the system restart, the problem disappears.

Login without password

Now consider the question of how to log on to Windows 10 without a password. There are two options: the input at system startup and the exit from sleep mode.

In the second case, the adjustment is made through the adjustment of the current power scheme, where you need to uncheck the password request item when you exit. As a supplement, you can also disable the quick launch, which can eliminate some problems with the system hanging.

But when you need to log on to Windows 10 without a password at the system startup stage, you should use the disabling of the requirement in the settings of the account parameters called by the netplwiz command (a check mark is simply removed from the item).

You can use the system registry, where we find the Winlogon partition in the HKLM branch, check the DefaultUserName entry for the user name and the DefaultPassword parameter, where the current valid password is registered. If there is no such key, you need to create a string parameter (String Value), name it DefaultPassword, then enter the password and confirm it. Next, you need to activate the administrator entry (the AutoAdminLogon key is set to one).

Utilities to change the Start menu and fix problems

In principle, automated utilities can be used to change the appearance, configure startup components, or eliminate problems associated with it. For the interface can be used all sorts of start tweakers, and for correcting errors - the "native" program for setting the start menu of Windows 10 from Microsoft, which can be downloaded on the company's official website. But in general, as can be seen from all of the above, the necessary actions can be performed independently.

What to give preference? Dkmatsya, it's better to use manual configuration, because the programs for changing the interface work in the background and consume a significant amount of resources (CPU and RAM load).
