Why do men grow a beard: there is a real reason

Is there a meaning in the beard in terms of evolution? Children, women and many men do well without this eccentric attribute. However, if you walk through the streets of large cities, you will certainly meet people who are accustomed to growing a beard. Today, the vegetation on the face of the stronger sex can have a completely different shape and size. Someone prefers to walk with a two-week stubble, someone - with a neat French beard, and someone does not shave for months.

Does the beard bring the opposite sex?

We used to notice various nuances, if it comes to appearance. It would be logical to assume that the beard originally could serve to attract the attention of representatives of the opposite sex. Some later studies have revealed another goal of wearing a brutal attribute. So, the habit of not shaving could contribute to raising the status of men in the circle of their own kind.

Compared with females and male primates, humans have pronounced natural differences in appearance. Could the beard become an additional accent in attracting women? This question will be answered by sociological surveys that have been conducted in sufficient numbers. It is curious that women did not come to the same denominator. According to some respondents, a sexy man is one who has a ten-day unshaven appearance. However, many women do not like beards at all or treat them with disgust. As we see, the vegetation on the face does not give additional dividends to attract a sexual partner. Smoothly shaved men are often more attractive in the eyes of the fair half of humanity.

Beard can eliminate competitors

However, scientists insist on the version of sexual selection. According to experts, in order to attract a woman, it is not enough to be outwardly attractive. Men must withstand competition with their fellows, proving their own worth. There are suggestions that beards evolved precisely for this purpose.

Observation of experts

Curiously, but at the time of the increase in the male population and the decrease in the female beard and whiskers have always become more fashionable. In fact, not all men have dense vegetation on their face, this is directly related to the level of testosterone. If you show your potential to people around you, people begin to perceive a man with a dense vegetation in a completely different way. A number of studies have shown the following: both men and women assess the beard in terms of strength and aggression. In addition, the vegetation on the face makes you look older and more manly. Therefore, the dominant men in the struggle for a lady's heart can easily eliminate competitors, who grow a thin beard.

Domination offers many opportunities

This statement is true in our days, and throughout the history of the development of mankind. Dominant individuals have a staggeringly short path to the possibility of mating. Thus, genetic bases indicate that about eight percent of the modern male population in Asian countries are descendants of Genghis Khan.

But in the Foggy Albion, a study was conducted, which examined the characteristics of men's fashion in accordance with gender imbalance. Nigel Barber sampled between the years 1842 and 1971. It turned out that at the time of the predominance of the male population in the UK, the popularity of beard and mustache increased sharply.

The voice is also of great importance

But, as it turned out, beards - this is not the only tool that reflects the dominance. The voice is also of great importance. So, people give their preference in elections to politicians with low and piercing voices. Men during the contest assignments often resort to this trick: if they want to show their superiority, they simply lower the tone of the voice.

A unique experiment

To trace the evolution of the beard and voice, the scientists conducted a unique experiment. Twenty men and the same number of women were selected as volunteers. They had to evaluate six people on videotape in terms of degree of dominance and attractiveness. And all the people behind the scenes have undergone four stages of "evolution": from clean-shaven faces to hardened bearded men. Previously, for each part of the video, scientists applied audio effects to change the voice. In some cases, the tone of the participants' speech grew higher, in others it was lower, and she herself was more piercing. As a result, the following was clarified.

Beards do not affect the degree of attractiveness

As a result, in the rating of attractiveness, the beards did not give any advantages to their owners. But in the context of dominance, the vegetation on the face invariably brought additional bonuses.

Compared to the timbre of the voice

Male voices, which sounded a little deeper, were perceived by participants as more attractive. It is curious that the two opposite extremes (the highest and lowest voices) were not so popular. However, deeper bottoms scored more points on the scale of dominance.

Conclusion

The tense situation in the marriage market forces both men and women to improve themselves. Thus, representatives of the strong half of humanity, in addition to the beard and velvet voice, spend a lot of time building up muscle mass. Women tend to be slim and enjoy makeup. In part, our instincts are not aimed at attracting a potential partner. The primary goal is to supersede themselves from the marital market.
