What is the spar and what functions does it perform?

What is a spar? This part is the basic element of the construction of each vehicle. In all cases, the auto spar is located along the entire length of the car - connecting with special jumpers, it forms a frame, to which all the suspension parts, body, etc., are attached. Outwardly in its construction this part resembles a ladder, which makes many motorists call it Staircase. In this article, we will learn in more detail what a spar is and look at how it is related to other elements of the car.

Each driver, who at least once dealt with this structural element, knows that outwardly it looks like a long metal profile. In other words, it is an ordinary steel pipe with a rectangular cross-section.

To date, there are two main types of spar arrangements:

  • A detail that runs along the entire length of the car's body.
  • Two separate structures, located in the front and rear of the machine.

Each car's spar (its photo you can see below) has a high strength, and during the entire operation of the vehicle it withstands enormous loads - the weight of the engine, passengers, and the goods being transported (if it is commercial freight transport). In addition, with every impact on the pit and other irregularities, this part can withstand the load of the wheels, so you need to monitor the state of the "steel pipe with lintels" from time to time.

Do not confuse a ladder frame with a ladder spar. The last element is part of the frame, but does not replace its function. The frame of the above type is usually supplied with U-shaped spars and installed on all trucks and SUVs. Cars do not have a ladder frame, since they do not carry such loads as commercial vehicles. But nevertheless they are equipped (and without fail) spars, otherwise the car body would be bent at the first impact on the pit.

Loads and interconnections between other units

As already described above, this part withstands huge loads from the engine and wheels when driving. It should be noted that with each reload and impact on the unevenness of the spar has the property of deforming, that is, to change its design. And since this element performs the same important functions as the frame, its deformation leads to the most unpredictable consequences. This can be poor handling, uneven arrangement of all body elements and even a violation of the geometry of the suspension. Most often, such troubles are observed in cars that have experienced the maximum load on their bodies, that is, those who have been in an accident. What is a spar on a car that has been in an accident? This is a damaged part that has lost its integrity and thus negatively affects other elements in the car. Therefore, when buying a car "used" it is better not to pay attention to cars that have been in an accident, the way even they have an irreproachable appearance.

So, we learned what a spar is and figured out its functions. Successful trips to you!
