What can you eat in the post of Uspensky? How to fast?

According to the Orthodox tradition, the Assumption Post is designed to prepare believers for the great holiday - the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. The beginning of the Assumption is a joyful day for Christians. According to the promise, the Mother of Jesus Christ is the Intercessor of all who resort to Her help, and believers for fifteen days of fasting visit the temples, bring glory to the Queen of Heaven and do works of mercy.

What is the meaning of keeping posts?

Abstaining from food and other carnal pleasures is the sacrifice of Christians to the Lord and His Most Pure Mother. In different parishes, traditions are insignificantly different, therefore baptized people come to church and from the priests learn specifically what it is possible to eat in fasting. Uspensky is very strict, but only lasts two weeks. Throughout the second half of August, the churches are full of believers who carry honey, apples and bread for consecration. Three Savior give Christians three shields - from disease, hunger and poverty and from evil people.

Honey Spas

Honey Spas, celebrated on the 14th of August, marks the beginning of the Assumption Post. He is considered a Savior on the water, a wet Savior. On this day in the temples of the altar a large wooden cross is taken out. Orthodox come to worship him and congratulate each other on the holiday - the ascension, or the origin, of the Holy and Life-giving Cross of the Lord. Another name of the holiday is the Poppy Spas in memory of the nine martyrs of the Maccabees. On this day it is common to bake unleavened cakes and eat them with poppy milk and honey. After a wet Savior, swimming in open water is prohibited.

Apple Savior

On August 19, Orthodox celebrate the Second Savior - the apple, or the Savior on the mountain, and celebrate the Great Twelve Feast - the Transfiguration of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is strictly forbidden to work on this day. All Orthodox should take part in the procession.

Starting from this day, you can eat apples, cook apple compotes, jams, make jam, pastille and pies.

Bread Savior

This is the day when the Uspensky fast ends. Bread Savior, or nut, is considered a Savior on the canvas. It is celebrated on August 29, the day after the Assumption. At this time, the transference of the Man-Made Image of Jesus Christ is celebrated.

Giving honors to the Creator and His Mother, bringing a bloodless sacrifice in the form of asceticism and praying sincerely to God and the Blessed Virgin, the Orthodox receive help and protection from Them on earth, on water and in heaven. On the Day of the Assumption, when the Assumption Post ends, a festive table is prepared. If the Assumption falls on Wednesday or Friday, it consists of fish dishes and plant food, and a short meal with meat dishes is carried over the next day.

Admissible products

Food in the Assumption fast corresponds to the strictest abstinence. The prohibitions on eating one or the other food are the same as during Lent. Vegetable food and acridas are what you can eat in fasting. Uspensky imposes a ban on meat, dairy and fish. Vegetable oil is available only on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday - dry, that is, not cooked vegetables and fruits. On Tuesday and Thursday - hot food without butter. These days you can eat seafood - squid, octopus, shrimp, etc., but not fish. It can only be eaten on the feast of the Transfiguration. This is how the food ration looks like in the Assumption fast by days. In some parishes, fish are allowed on Saturday and Sunday.

Popular dishes in Assumption

The menu seems monotonous and does not welcome indulging gluttony. However, hunger strikes are also not required. During strict posts, you can bake bread and burrs from different types of flour, sprinkling them with seeds and nuts. Seafood is boiled in salted boiling water for about one minute and is eaten by pouring lemon juice. Sour and wet fruits can be eaten with boiled pasta, potatoes and cereals. Fresh vegetables and spicy greens are cut into pieces, salted and poured with natural fruit vinegar. Prepare fruit salads with honey and nut milk. They are not only very pleasant to taste, but also useful. And this is not a complete list of what you can eat in the post of Uspensky. You can find in the stores fiber, which can be planted with boiling water, nut milk, carrot juice, pumpkin, etc. Very tasty fresh tomatoes, sprinkled with pepper and salt and wilted in the oven. On Saturday and Sunday bake pies and strudels with lean stuffings and vegetable oil. If you cook the mayonnaise without eggs, but on good oil and mustard with the addition of apple cider vinegar, then the menu of the Assumption will not seem scant at all.

Walnut milk

Walnut milk is suitable for filling a huge number of dishes. It is done quite simply. And you can use not only any nuts, but also seeds of poppy, hemp, sesame, pumpkin, etc. Empty the shells of nuts with boiling water and remove the top film. It creeps very easily. If you stay a little - it does not matter. Nuts must be crushed with a pestle or grinded with a blender, which is much faster. During the process, pour water on slightly. Should get a gruel. It can be wrung out through gauze, hanging over a gravy boat, then you get real milk, and you can use it together with the thicket. Add a few grams of honey or sugar water.

It is even easier to make such milk from the finished nut flour, which happens in health food stores. It is enough to mix it with sweetened boiled water. Use on the same day.

Pumpkin and shrimp salad

To prepare this dish you will need the following products:

- Fresh pumpkin;

- peeled boiled shrimps;

- canned green peas or corn;

- Walnut milk;

- boiled rice;

- avocado;

- onion-turnip;

- fiber;

- salt, pepper, nutmeg and natural fruit vinegar.

Pumpkin to peel, cut and put out with walnut milk. When it becomes soft enough, take it out and put it to cool.

Prepare a dressing dressing. To do this, mix the fiber with the liquid in which the pumpkin was stewed, add grated nutmeg, salt, pepper and vinegar. Bring to a boil and turn it off immediately. Cool down.

Avocado should be loosened from the skins and bones and cut into cubes.

Peel the onion, chop it finely and give it over with boiling water, so that extra bitterness comes out.

Put rice, peas, pumpkin, avocado, onions and shrimp in a deep bowl. Pour sauce and gently mix. Half an hour later you can try. During this time he will infuse and soak.

Dough for strudels

In a bowl, pour a glass of warm water, add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Stir and in small portions, through a sieve, add flour. Stir first in a bowl, then shift to the table and knead, adding refined vegetable oil, about three tablespoons. Flours need as much as take a dough - from 0.5 to 1 kilogram, taking into account the rolling. Dough to beat off the table, wrap in a film and leave for 40-50 minutes to rest. Sprinkle the table with flour and roll out the dough as thin as possible. Transfer it to the canvas, sprinkled with flour, and continue rolling to transparency. From time to time, the dough should be removed from the cloth and turned over to the other side. The finished layer is sprinkled with breadcrumbs and put half of the stuffing on one side, 5-7 cm from the edges. Using the fabric on which it lies, roll the roll. Edge the edges and wrap it on a roll. Carefully transfer to a baking tray with Teflon paper. Lubricate with a solution of strong, slightly sweet tea. The oven at maximum temperature is fifteen minutes, not longer.

The stuffing can be, in practice, everything you can eat in the post of Uspensky. This buckwheat porridge with onions, and stewed cabbage, and mashed potatoes with mushrooms, and apples with dried apricots, and poppies, and pumpkin with rice, spinach with soy cheese, and even seafood with fried onions and oatmeal.
