Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas was founded in 1930 on the basis of the oil department of the Moscow Mining Academy and was called the Moscow Oil Institute named after IM Gubkin. The building of the university looks very fashionable, and the territory occupied by it is protected by a high forged fence. University named after Gubkin was formed during the disintegration of the MGA. On April 17, 1930, when the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued an order to create six independent institutes on the basis of the Moscow Mining Academy. These were the following: Mining, Nonferrous Metals, Peat, Ferrous Metallurgy, Geological Exploration and Oil.

The very first rector of the educational institution was appointed Academician Ivan Mikhailovich Gubkin.
