We recall the classics: Chekhov's short summary "Ionych"

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov - the greatest Russian playwright, who made a huge contribution to the development of world literature. At one time he was recognized Honorary Academician in the category of elegant literature by the Imperial Academy of Sciences. For all his life the author created more than 900 works. His plays have been staged in many theaters of the world for more than a century. The public is also familiar with his short stories. In them, to the smallest detail, with irony and sarcasm, Chekhov draws images of ordinary people, ridiculing their vices. One of these stories is the author's work "Ionich". In the center of the story is the life story of Zemsky doctor Dmitry Ionych Startsev. This is a narrative about a man with good inclinations and noble dreams, which imperceptibly turns into an ordinary man in the street, indifferent to everything and everything. So, Chekhov's short summary of "Ionich".

Acquaintance of the protagonist with the family of the Turkins

In one provincial town, called S., was practiced by a young doctor of the Dmiry Ionich Startsev. Life in this place was boring and monotonous. Despite the fact that there were a library, a theater, and a club in the city, these institutions were not very popular among the townsfolk. However, there were also intelligent educated people, for example the Turkin family. The head of the family, Ivan Petrovich often arranged amateur theatrical performances, in which he was the main character. He had a good sense of humor, so it was sometimes impossible to understand whether he was joking or talking seriously. His wife, Vera Iosifovna, was engaged in writing novels and stories, which she willingly read before the public. Their daughter, Ekaterina Ivanovna, played well on the piano and dreamed of joining the conservatory. Dmitry Ionich was often advised to visit the Turks and get acquainted with them. Once he decided to accept the invitation of the head of the family and visit them. Acquaintance took place. It made a very pleasant impression on Dmitri Ionovich. Even Chekhov's short summary of "Ionych" is able to convey the special lightness of the character and liveliness of the mind of the protagonist who has not yet mired in the everyday life of a small town.

Proposition of the hand and heart of Startsev and Katya's refusal

A year passed before the Zemsky doctor visited the Turkin family again. This time he was summoned to Vera Iosifovna, who had already suffered from migraine for a long time. Appearing in the house, the main character noted how prettier for this time, Catherine Ivanovna or Kitty, as her family called. Imperceptibly for himself, Startsev falls in love with a girl. Now Zemsky doctor becomes a frequent guest in the family of the Turkins. Once he decides to make a proposal to Katya. Having dressed in someone else's tailcoat, since he did not have his own, our hero goes to the house to the Turks and in private he offers Kotik to get married. Unexpectedly, he gets a sharp refusal. Ekaterina Ivanovna explains to him that her plans do not include marriage, that a conservatory and a brilliant musical career await her. Dmitry Ionich did not expect such a turn. He is stunned. His pride is wounded. Soon our hero will find out about Katya's departure to Moscow. Such a pure and full of hope shows the protagonist at the beginning of the narrative Chekhov. The story "Ionich", a brief summary of which is given here, is a story about true human values, about the importance of not missing out on life the most important thing - the love of loved ones.

Ionich's meeting with Katya in a few years

It took a long four years before Dmitry Ionich again saw Katya. During this time, the Zemsky doctor acquired a great deal of practice. He grew stout, walked reluctantly, preferring to ride a troika with bells on foot. During this time, he almost never visited the Turks. But one day our hero receives an invitation letter from Vera Iosifovna and Catherine Ivanovna. Startsev goes to visit them. Meeting him with Kotik did not make him a proper impression. But Catherine was clearly excited. Now it was no longer a romantic girl, dreaming of dreams about music, but an adult woman, who had time to be disappointed in life. She invites Jonich to the garden to speak privately. There Katya tells our hero that she has lost faith in her pianist's talent, that for her now he is a pure exalted person who has a noble goal in life - to help the sick. In Startsev, this revelation does not find a response in the heart, and, leaving the house of the Turkins, he is relieved to think about how good that he did not once married to Catherine Ivanovna. Chekhov's summary of "Ionych" does not allow us to convey the full extent of the changes that are being made in Kata and Startseva only four years after their last meeting.

The spiritual degradation of the protagonist

After this meeting, there was another letter from Kostik Startsev. But he did not answer him and did not visit them anymore. Many years later. During this time, Ionich got rich, having already acquired a huge practice. He felt unwell, terribly fat. Ionich did not think about leaving work, greed overcame. The life of our hero is boring and monotonous. He is indifferent to everything and everyone. He is lonely, there is no soul near. Ekaterina Ivanovna also aged, often sick. The only joy for her is the daily play on the piano. Chekhov's story "Ionych," a brief summary of which is given here, is a story of what can happen to a person who is deprived of the opportunity to develop and move forward. Unfortunately, we often realize that we lost it, only years later, when we can not regain it.

You have read Chekhov's summary of "Ionich". I advise you to give time to this work in full.
