Tennessee Williams, "Tram" Desire ": a summary of the chapters

One of the most famous plays in the history of the world theater was the work of Tennessee Williams "Tram" Desire. " Its summary is known to many, but the source of inspiration of the great playwright of our time was hidden from the general public. Perhaps the solution should be sought in the life of the writer.

Birth of a genius

In 1911 a salesman-salesman, who traded in footwear, named Williams, was born a son. Cornelius, the father of the child, happened to abuse alcoholic beverages, but he did not consider it a sin, for he had his own ideas about what a man should be like. All friends called him "C-C", on the initials, the first letter of both of his names (Cornelius and Coffin). The father of the future writer was born in Tennessee. He named his son in the southern manner, magnificently - by Thomas Lanir Williams the Third. The history is silent about who the first two Thomas Lanir were.

Young years

The son, not that did not justify the expectations and hopes of Xi Xi - he grew up in complete contrast to the image that he wanted to see. Having survived diphtheria and barely survived, Tom was a weak and fragile boy, and not at all a pugnacious, tough-hearted man, as his father would have liked. As for the mother, she also had shortcomings. Nervousness, hysteria and a tendency to snobbery were character traits that depressed the child, and one could only regret it if they did not become the starting material for the creation of artistic images, which had to be populated with many plays by the playwright, including the "Tram" Desire ". The summary of each of the works is saturated with people suffering and simultaneously mercilessly tormenting their loved ones. So in life it happens, unfortunately, often, although Williams created plots in which these situations were presented as if in a concentrated form.

Way to success

Becoming a young man, Thomas was carried away by literature, and nothing - no personal setbacks, no monotonous work on the shoe production, where his father arranged him, nor many other unpleasant circumstances and troubles - could not affect his life path. He wrote several plays, studying at universities (first in Missouri, then in Iowa), and was even noticed - his story was published by a little-known magazine. In 1939 appeared the pseudonym of Tennessee, in honor of the homeland of his father, who, despite being rude to himself, the son still loved. This happened after awarding him a thousand-dollar Rockefeller grant (huge money then, almost a kilogram of gold) for the play "The Battle of the Angels." Success, however, did not have a product. Then there was New Orleans - the future scene of the play "Tram" Desire ". The summary of the first theatrical scenario, which was seriously talked about, namely the "Glass Menagerie" (1945), fits into two words: a play-memory. Formed a peculiar style, describing the opposing characters, personified cheerful rudeness and defenseless naive simplicity, which, according to Shakespeare, "foolishness is known".

The beginning of the spectacle

In 1947, Tennessee Williams created his most famous work - the play "Tram" Desire ". The summary of the chapters is difficult to break: after viewing the play or movie, as well as reading the text, it is perceived monolithic. We should especially mention the description of the situation, which, unlike most dramatic scenarios, is not limited to a dry statement of what is on the right, left and behind, but possesses psychologicality. Yes, the landscape is dull, but there is also some beauty in it, albeit peculiar, which manifests itself even in spoiling and "perforation". Black musicians play the blues - this is clear from the expression "blue (sad) piano".

Stanley appears, he looks like a brutal cave dweller, and even his first act is to throw his wife a piece of meat wrapped in blood-stained paper. As if the hunter brought prey and laughs joyfully at his luck. Such symbols are imbued with the whole play "Tram" Desire ". The brief content of the first paintings introduces the viewer to the course of events occurring on the scene.

Faces and characters

Unlike the situation, the characters are listed almost without comment. The director or the reader is given the right to decide for himself what the characters look like, and perhaps even choose the appearance of one of their acquaintances for them. In the manner of behavior it is clear that Stanley Kowalski is rude, strong and energetic. Stella likes it the way it is, and therefore it is difficult to imagine it as a "muslin lady". This woman is an ordinary inhabitant of the slum quarter of the southern city, who knows how to stand up for herself in a street squabble, and have plenty of fun, and grieve, if circumstances have so arisen that one can not do without it. And now appears Blanche Dubois - a woman without which it is impossible to describe either a full or a short content. Tram "Desire" brings her to her sister. Yes, this vehicle does not have a number, its route is indicated by this poetic word. Stella is her younger sister, the difference is five years. From their conversation it is clear that Blanche has a problem with alcohol, but she tries to hide it. It is felt that her sister understands everything, but is ready to accept ... At least for now. She's pregnant. Actually, in addition to the listed actors, there is also Mitch, about him later. The remaining characters (doctor, black woman, young agent of some publication, warder and others) appear on the stage for a short while, and it is not worthwhile to focus on them, for that it is a short summary. "Tram" Desire "- a play of four main characters, of which the central figure is Blanche.

Main conflict

There is a basic law of drama, according to which there is no plot without conflict. Usually it has the character of a pronounced opposition between good and evil, and just as the current flows from one pole to another in an electrical circuit, events develop in the course of a continuous struggle between black and white or vice versa. Somewhat more difficult is the picture, about which Tennessee Williams wrote "Tram" Desire ". The summary of the plot of this play is almost impossible due to long and contradictory monologues. The play does not fit into the format of modern script literature. Sympathies of the spectator sometimes fluctuate from Blanche to Kowalski, depending on the moment. It's clear that the main character is hiding something, but is she only weak to whiskey? But it is obvious that the main conflict will develop between them.

Secondary circumstances

The first clash of characters is already observed in the second picture, when Stanley begins to calculate the cost of the Blanche outfits and recalls the code of Napoleon, according to which all the property of the wife belongs to her husband. On this basis, he believes that half of the joint inheritance of the sisters is his property, and reproaches his relative for humbug. Then in the story line appears Mitch - a simple plumber, and he likes a new friend who came from a distant sister of his friend 's wife . He is a simple man and does not hide his intentions, but they are the most serious. Such an outcome would perfectly suit everyone, but not Stanley, full of rabies. He feels enmity towards Blanche, mixed with lust, and, after all, this strange bouquet of emotions enters a phase of a hideous denouement.

The final

So what did Williams say about the "Tram" Desire "? The summary of the last picture leads to a depressed state. Stanley has already opened the eyes of naive Mitch to Blanche's past, has done violence against her, and now even the most unintelligent viewer is clear that the main character is going crazy. She sincerely believes that she has some fan who is about to come for her. He is a millionaire, lives in Miami (or Dallas), his name is Shep Huntley, and he loves her from college. This abundance of details can not deceive - on the contrary, it is all the more convincing that the heroine is mentally ill, the more they become. Meanwhile, her sister is collecting her suitcase.

And, finally, a car comes for her. Out of her come out a doctor and a warder, and the nature of the medical institution from which they arrived, there is no doubt. Blanche clings to the doctor, saying that it always depended on the kindness of people who happened to meet by chance.

Sadness and regret for human cruelty, callousness and indifference overwhelm the heart ...
