Suction pipe of the muffler: description and characteristics

In the device of any modern car there is an exhaust system. It consists of several parts, including a catalyst, exhaust manifold, resonator and silencer. Characteristic

The intake pipe of the silencer is an integral part of the exhaust system. This element is located after the exhaust manifold and in front of the resonator, consists of a metal base and a corrugation. The latter is not present on every system.

What is the diameter of the intake pipe of the silencer? UAZ "Patriot" is equipped with a 60-millimeter element. The diameter is comparable to what is available on the remaining components of the system: the silencer pipe, the catalyst and so on. A distinctive feature of the component of the exhaust system is the presence of two inputs that smoothly connect with each other. So, in the beginning, the exhaust gases enter the central exhaust manifold, then into the branching of the intake pipe. Further, the gases released from the engine cylinders are transferred under pressure to the catalyst. Here all harmful substances are burned down, turning into hydrogen, and are discharged outside. The final element in the system is a silencer. It is he who perceives all the acoustic loads, smoothing sounds and vibrations. At the exit, we have a clean and quiet exhaust. By the way, the characteristics of the receiving tube can be different. It is equipped with two or more inlet openings. As for the diameter, the receiver tube of the GAZ-3310 silencer has a size of 51 millimeters. Their purpose is the same - the removal of gases from the reservoir to the catalyst.

Material

The intake pipe of the silencer is made of different types of steel:

  • Stainless;
  • Aluminized;
  • Black.

All of them differ in price and quality. Let's look at them.

Stainless steel

Such receiving pipes are very rare because of their high cost. Usually stainless steel mufflers are produced. It looks very impressive. Mirror tube is not only a beautiful appearance, but also a lot of other advantages. So, it is necessary to note the resistance of this material to corrosion. Since the intake pipe is located under the bottom of the car, it is constantly exposed to external factors. Outside, mud, water and reagents are applied to its surface; The product is exposed to high temperature loads.
Stainless steel has high resistance against these factors. In addition, due to the complexity of manufacturing, the price for it is several times more expensive.

Aluminized intake pipe of silencer

It is made of ordinary steel. A distinctive feature is an aluminum coating designed to protect the part from corrosion. The service life of such pipes is about five years. Additionally can be completed with corrugation.

Black

The pipe is made of ordinary steel without additional processing, therefore the service life is often not more than two years. After this period, the replacement of the part for a new one is required. The cost relative to other materials is an order of magnitude lower.

Which one to choose?

The most common intake pipe of the muffler is aluminized. It costs several times less than stainless. At the same time it is highly resistant to corrosion and temperature changes. Motorists do not recommend buying a pipe from ordinary black steel without additional processing. Some manufacturers cover it with a layer of paint. But you need to understand that after a couple of months the pipe will lose its attractive appearance: high temperature, mud and water will do their job. And to remove it is quite difficult. Even if you have installed a gasket of the intake pipe of the muffler, it is not possible to unscrew the bolts: they stick to the base. The only way out is to cut the hats with a Bulgarian. As for the stainless intake pipe, it can serve for 10 years. The only thing is the price and availability on the market. On some cars, such an item has to be bought under the order.

Malfunctions

How to determine if the receiver is out of order? The surest way is visual inspection. Since the part is in a rather difficult place, without a lift it can not be diagnosed. Therefore, many motorists determine the malfunction "by ear". If the sound of the exhaust became louder, there were extra vibrations, and there is a smell of burning in the cabin, most likely the item has failed. But the pipe does not always break through. The corrugation of the exhaust pipe of the muffler, absorbing excessive vibrations and subject to high temperature loads, can burn out. Therefore, when these features appear, it is required to replace the receiving tube or corrugation on it.

How to replace?

To replace the worn out parts, you will need a set of spanners and a lift (overpass, inspection pit). In addition to the new pipe, a set of gaskets is also needed. The old ones are squeezed once.

So, in front of the bottom we find our pipe (usually it is bolted to 13). We fix a nut from one side, with another we twist a bolt. To facilitate unscrewing, you can use universal lubricant VD-40. If it is impossible to unscrew fasteners, we take the Bulgarian in hand and simply cut out the bolts (then we do not forget to buy new ones). We take the pipe, clean the place under the baking sheets and install new elements.

As for the replacement of the corrugation, the latter should be welded into the cavity of the pipe. Of course, it is easier to purchase a new part in the assembly (especially if it is made of stainless steel, which is not "picked up" by a conventional welding machine).

Helpful Tips

To reduce the risk of boiling to the surface, the bolts must be treated with graphite grease or Lithol before the twist. Such fasteners will be much easier to remove, rather than unprocessed. This completes the replacement procedure. You can start the engine and check the quality of the new pipe. From it should not flow. Otherwise, check the tightness of the bolts. If you are going to cut the corrugation and install a new one, pay attention to its length. The size should be 20-40 millimeters larger than the previous one (since a part of the pipe itself will be cut out).
