St. Petersburg. Zoo museum. History of creation. Exhibits. Opening Hours

Every traveler who has arrived in St. Petersburg before his eyes is a majestic city, which is often compared with Venice. And immediately in my head the words from A. Mironov's song pop up: "Before this beauty everything is fuss and smoke."

This city can rightly be called the magnetic pole of culture and aesthetics. There are no such places, monuments, museums and theaters in any other place in the world. The city was replaced by its short (by historical standards) life of three names, became the cradle of three revolutions. Built on the swamp, in hard-to-reach forests, it sparkled like a diamond, illuminating with its light the history of a great state.

The best

Adjective "most" can not exactly fit the Northern capital of Russia. It is not only the most beautiful, here are the most famous theaters, the largest museums. And if you are interested in flora and fauna, you can immerse yourself in the wonderful world of nature, and the wonderful city of St. Petersburg will help in this. Zoological Museum - an amazing place where the secrets of the universe are revealed.

St. Petersburg: Zoological Museum (history of creation)

This institution, like many others, began its existence with the light hand of Peter I. The museum was founded in 1714. At first it was a kunstkammer, for which they collected a small collection of strange animals. Interesting exhibits were constantly replenished. By 1832, they had accumulated so much, they represented such scientific value that the museum was given the status of a museum. And it became known as the Zoological Museum of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. In six years it was opened for visitors. The first director of the unique institution was Academician F. F. Brunt, who made a significant contribution to the creation of the museum fund. Many scientists gave their collections - it's A. Middendorf, and K. Baer. Such legendary pioneers, like Miklukho-Maklai and Nikolai Przhevalsky, constantly brought from their expeditions more and more new exhibits.

From year to year the collection grew, places became catastrophically not enough. In 1896 the museum moved to the building of the southern warehouse of the Stock Exchange. It took five years to equip the new premises, prepare the expositions.

In 1901 the Zoological Museum in St. Petersburg was inaugurated. The ceremony was attended by Nicholas II and his family. After the revolution, in 1930, the museum is part of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

It should be noted that in essence, it is still a laboratory in which studies in the field of biology and zoology are conducted. At the moment, the exhibition department of the Institute includes two bio stations, twelve laboratories, a huge library and its own information and publishing department.

Interesting place

The Zoological Museum in St. Petersburg has a large number of interesting exhibits, located on an area of six thousand square meters. And this is certainly not the limit, because the foundation is constantly replenished with new specimens brought from various scientific expeditions. Now there are more than thirty thousand animals for display, dioramas with scenes from the wild nature, a lot of documents telling about the lives of our smaller brothers. There are still about fifteen million exhibits in the vaults.

All expositions are arranged in a systematic manner. Here in separate halls are exhibited representatives of the fauna - from the simplest to primates. There are also exhibits representing the evolutionary theory of Darwin. Here you can admire rare animals. Amazing exhibitions are accompanied by fascinating stories of experienced guides. Coming to St. Petersburg, the Zoological Museum is worth a visit.

Exhibits

No visitor remains indifferent. The museum has a large number of mollusks and corals (department of "Invertebrate animals"), marsupials from Australia, rare species of tropical birds. Thanks to the unique processing of stuffed animals, all the exhibits look completely alive. In this museum there are the richest collections (the best in the world) of cetaceans and fauna of the Palearctic. Mummies of small mammoths who were given the names of Dima and Masha are very popular among guests. Also, the skeleton of a woolly mammoth and a southern elephant found on Kolyma, on the bank of the Berezovka River, attracts attention. No less interesting are the remains of mammals that inhabited the earth in the fortieth century BC.

The institution is located on the University embankment, building 1. This place is very popular, many are rushing to visit the Zoological Museum. Opening hours: daily, except Tuesday. Excursions are held from eleven in the morning until six in the evening.
