SHRUS - what is this detail? And how is it arranged?

Cars equipped with a front-wheel drive in the 60s were very interested in engineers and developers of almost all automotive brands. It was believed that this arrangement of bodies allows you to get more space in the cabin. To implement this idea, engineers came up with a rather complicated mechanism at the time. It allowed to ensure the rotation of the front wheels and to control them with a smaller size of the structure.

How to create the joints

Since there are several types of angular velocity hinges, it is very difficult to determine exactly which design was first. But there is an opinion that a knot based on balls, one of the popular today, was invented in the 1920s.

The idea of creating a cam mechanism came to the mind of the French inventor Gregoire. In the early 20's, he received a patent for this invention.

The coupled cardan element of equal angular velocities was used mainly in American car models and in transmission systems of the French Pan-Levassor.

CV joints - what is it?

SHRUS is the hinge of equal angular velocities. It is used in the design of an independent suspension on front-wheel drive vehicles. This part provides not only rotational energy, but also allows you to control the rotation of the wheels. So, this node allows you to turn the drive wheel to an angle of up to 70 degrees. The detail is similar to a hand grenade, therefore motorists and have nicknamed this hinge.

This design is also found in cars with rear or all-wheel drive, but only in models with independent suspension. In this case, the rear wheels are able to move horizontally and vertically. There is an external and internal SHRUS. What is this detail, you will soon find out.

How are the joints of angular velocities

Depending on the type of component, the structure can be different. However, knowing how the SHRUS works, what kind of element it is, and what its role is, we can say the following. On one side, the shaft is connected to the hub bearing, and on the other hand to the differential. Hinges of equal speeds give the energy of rotation from the motor to the drive wheels through the bearings.

The main components of the product are the casing and housing. Both on the case and on the cage, located inside the case, special grooves are cut, where the balls are installed. The balls very tightly connect these components to each other, thereby transferring the rotation.

Thanks to the larger working angle that the outer CV joint has (which is what you already know), the angle of rotation can reach 70 degrees. The range of possibilities of the internal hinge allows it to move only by 20 degrees. So, both externally and internally the product uses different kinds of elements. On the outside, the drive shaft is equipped with ball-type shafts, but with the inner - tripod hinges.

The outer product consists of a cage mounted on the shaft and with grooves along the radius.

The housing also has grooves. They are equipped with balls, through which torque is transmitted.

Internal parts can differ in their design, depending on the model of the car and the type of suspension.

So, on the VAZ models the grooves are straight, not radial. In Ukrainian ZAZ, rollers are mounted on three spikes, rotating on needle bearings.

In our article, we consider the CV joints. What is it, you already roughly understand, they work in quite problematic places, because there is always a lot of dirt and dust, so they are equipped with special protection. For this, a safety boot is used - it is a rubber pad that is securely held on the body by means of clamps.

Advantages and disadvantages

You already know a lot about the CV joints (which are important details in the design of the car). Therefore, we can discuss the main advantages and disadvantages of these products. Among the advantages can be identified this property. When transferring energy, there is no power loss, as is the case with other mechanisms with a different operating principle. Also among the advantages - simple replacement and low cost.

Among the shortcomings are the structural features of the anther. After all, it performs several functions at once.

It protects the mechanism from dirt and a container for lubrication. The disadvantage of such a detail as SHRUS is that this connection is located where it is impossible to prevent its contact with other objects. So, anther can easily be torn, and without lubrication, the "grenade" will quickly fail.

Resource or a little about maintenance

The resource of these parts can depend on a large number of various factors.

Most often, this indicator is different due to the characteristics of the structure, as well as use. And if the car owner can not change the design, then the operating mode is completely in his power.

Wearing "grenades" in natural conditions is inevitable. But often the capabilities of these nodes are dramatically reduced through the fault of the car owner.

Someone likes to start, so that the car slips when the wheels are turned. In this position, the external nodes are in a partially clamped state - these are increased loads. The investigation is an early replacement.

Other car owners like tuning. Sometimes the power of the engine increases to serious limits, which does not lead to anything good. The more torque, the faster the wear.

Anthers

Another group of drivers forgets to check the condition of the anthers. There is a factor that significantly influences the terms of the work of such a detail as the joints. What is the lubricant, it is easy to guess. So, you need regular maintenance of the mechanism. If the airtightness of the anther is impaired, this will not only cause contamination of the mechanism, but also the absence of lubricant. All this does not have the best effect on the longevity of the site.

To extend the life of the product, you need to regularly monitor the anther, and the driving style should be more relaxed. Then this node will last long.
