Saransk (airport): history, reconstruction, contacts

Saransk Airport is an air and transport hub of the eponymous city in the Republic of Mordovia. It was founded in 1960. At present, work is underway to reconstruct it. In 2018, it is planned that Saransk (airport) will serve participants and fans of the World Cup. How to get to it? Which airlines are served here?

History

The history of the development of air traffic in Mordovia begins in the late 1940s, when the functions of the transport hub began to be performed by the airfield of the military destination Lyambir. In 1955 a civil airport was opened in the city of Saransk, which was located not far from Gagarin Street. In 1960, near the city, in the vicinity of the village of Luhovka, a modern airport was opened. By 1964, a new terminal building was erected. In 1981, a new concrete runway was constructed, designed to receive such large aircraft as the Tu-134 and Yak-42.

In the late 1980s, Saransk (airport) served more than 10 thousand flights per year. The 1990s are characterized by a decline in passenger traffic, which was the result of stagnation in the aviation industry. To the World Cup, which will be held in Russia in 2018, the airport is planned to be reconstructed. In 2015, Saransk Airport received the status of an international air transport hub.

Reconstruction of Saransk airport

Initially, the reconstruction of the airport was planned to be carried out from 2013 to 2017, but they began a little later, despite the fact that they were timely financed. The lag is explained by the failure of the construction contractor IC "Aerodor" of its direct obligations. From it, fines and penalties for the postponement of works were collected in court.

During the reconstruction it is planned to increase the size and modernize the runway cover. Its length will be 3,221 km, and width - 45 m. The number of parking on the apron will increase to 20. Thanks to this it will be possible to service such airliners as "Boeing 737-800", "Airbus A320" and other aircraft of similar take-off weight. The former building of the terminal will be completely reconstructed, and two additional terminals and two 50-bed hotels will be built. The main apron and air terminal will connect a 900-meter high road. The capacity of the aero node will reach 1360 passengers per hour.

Despite the fact that the work was repeatedly delayed, the modernization was almost completed. Now work on the reconstruction of the runway and the airport, roads and the construction of hotels have already been carried out. The construction of terminals is underway.
