History

The history of civil aviation in the Komi Republic and the city of Syktyvkar begins in 1925, when the hydroplane plane landed on the Sysol river for the first time. Since then, aircraft have begun to land on the water or on snow in convenient places near the city.

The first airport in Ust-Sysolsk (formerly Syktyvkar) was established in 1929. It was a barrack-type building with one runway and was in the same place as a modern airport. In the 30s, long, regular flights to Vorkuta, Kirov and Arkhangelsk began to open, and the technical staff numbered more than a dozen aircraft.

The new large Syktyvkar airport and its modern terminal were built in 1967. Today it is a Class B airport serving an average of 750 people per day and about 20 flights a day.
