Mytishchi Machine Building Plant: History, Products

JSC "Mytishchi Machine Building Plant" is one of the oldest machine-building plants in Russia. Initially, the company's profile was the production of railway cars. The assembly of automatic control systems was set up in the Great Patriotic War, and after its completion - unique caterpillar chassis for special equipment and antiaircraft installations. In parallel, dump trucks, tow trucks, bunker trucks, rolling stock for the subway were produced.

Establish an enterprise

The official opening of the car-building enterprise under the patronage of the well-known industrialist Sava Morozov took place in 1897. Creation of production was personally certified by Tsar Nicholas II. The plant was equipped with the latest equipment at that time, and specialized in the production of railway rolling stock for various purposes. Also here were produced cars for urban horse-drawn carriages - trams and metro.

Glorious history

Over the 120-year history Mytishchi Machine Building Plant has never stopped work. His products have always been in demand. In the 20-ies of the twentieth century, MMZ was the first in Russia to start producing electric trains. In parallel, the company produced 12 types of trailers and motor trams. In the early 30-ies the plant was instructed to design the first cars for the Moscow subway under construction.

With the outbreak of the war, Mytishchi Machine Building Plant switched to the production of military products. Antitank hedgehogs, grenades for grenades, and mortar plates were manufactured here. Later began to produce armored trains. In 1942 the enterprise was renamed into the plant No. 40.

From trams to self-propelled plants

As a result of the rapid offensive operations of 1942-1943, Soviet troops captured many trophy tanks. In Mytishchi it was decided to organize, on the basis of the chassis of German technology, the production of self-propelled assault and anti-tank installations SU-76i and SG-122.

In 1943, OKB-40 was created, which was headed by the talented designer of combat tracked vehicles Astrov Nikolai Alexandrovich. First Mytishchi Machine Building Plant assembled light T-80 tanks, but it was decided to replace them with more popular self-propelled artillery units. Soon the workshop left the first serial "self-propelled" SU-76, well-proven on the WWII fronts.

Postwar production

After the war, part of the production was focused on the manufacture of chassis for tractors, special equipment, various artillery (ASU-57, K-73, BSU-11, ASU-85) and anti-aircraft systems (ZSU "Shilka", ZRK "Kub", "Buk "," Thor "," Tungus "). At the same time, civilian products were produced in adjacent areas: trucks, subway cars, dump trucks, trailers, etc.

To restore the country, auto equipment was required. MMZ has mastered 9 modifications of trucks on the basis of ZIS and ZIL for work in the countryside and in construction. Their design was constantly modernized and had a decent quality of execution. In the peak years, the maximum output of dump trucks reached 65,000 units.

In the 70's Mytishchi Machine Building Plant entered the international market. In 1972, the company supplied a batch of wagons to the Czech Republic for the Prague metro. After the rolling stock was exported to Hungary (Budapest), Poland (Warsaw), Bulgaria (Sofia).

Reorganization

The combination of closed military and civilian production created organizational and logistical difficulties. Particularly acute was the question of the neighborhood of the two parallel sectors in the 90s. The enterprise actively sought (and found!) Foreign investors for the modernization of the car building site, but the availability of production lines of military equipment hampered cooperation.

In 2009, a strategic decision was taken to divide production with the organization of individual plants. Mythischinsky Machine Building Plant is now in charge of fulfilling military orders and manufacturing of vehicles. Metrovagonmash fully focused on assembling the rolling stock for the underground.

Practice has shown that it is more profitable to combine separate enterprises into holdings - this allows you to accumulate working capital, receive large state orders, and avoid intra-industry competition. Given the trends in recent years, in 2016 MMZ became part of the Kalashnikov concern.

Production

Today, MMZ remains a major specialized enterprise that designs and manufactures crawler chassis with unique characteristics. In its model line, 11 modifications of GM family cars. The basic model is GM-569.

Among the civilian products that the Mytishchi Machine Building Plant has mastered:

  • Trailers, semi-trailers;
  • Construction and agricultural dump trucks;
  • Concrete trucks;
  • Tractors saddle;
  • Municipal engineering;
  • Tow trucks.

After receiving a large defense order, since 2011 the main capacities have been reoriented to the assembly of caterpillar machines. At MMZ has its own testing range, where running and running tests of special equipment are conducted.

Without the GM chassis it is difficult to imagine modern Russian mobile anti-aircraft systems. They have proven themselves as an extremely reliable technique capable of overcoming considerable distances over rough terrain.
