Reliable system - brake caliper

One of the most important roles in the design of the brake system is the brake caliper. The safety of movement on the car often depends on this mechanism. When the brake disc is squeezed , the brake shoe transmits the load to the caliper, and then it transfers it to the chassis parts of the car.

Structurally, the brake caliper can be represented as two interconnected parts. One of which is a fixed bracket attached to the trunnion with the help of bolts. And the second one is a mobile brake caliper fixed with bolts and repair kit to the bracket. And in order for the pads to loosen freely when the pedal is released, the movable slide can move horizontally.

The brake caliper has a cylinder that compresses the brake pads when the brake pedal is depressed, and the caliper is connected to the hydraulic system of the vehicle. Due to this, all loads are transferred not directly to the "running gear", but through the caliper bracket and other parts. The process itself can be represented in the form of the conversion of kinetic energy into thermal energy. What happens is due to the friction of the pads and the disc, as well as the friction of the wheels on the road surface.

Drum brake can be considered analogue of the support, but in modern cars this type is rare. And the unpopularity of the drum brake is due to the fact that it often fails, and also less effective than the caliper. Therefore today even on non-wheeled wheels the brake caliper is used exclusively.

This design has become widely used in the automotive industry in the last decade. And merit to that, of course, the undeniable advantages of this system: the simplicity of the design itself, high braking efficiency, ease of maintenance, and durability. Another plus of the support is a small weight of the structure, and this is achieved due to the small volume of metal used in the manufacture.

Brake support, in fact, has only one drawback: it is its openness, that is, in rainy weather, the brake disc can get water, which reduces the efficiency of braking. But it is thanks to its "openness" that this mechanism does not overheat, which is rather a plus.

The brake caliper rarely fails. And its maintenance consists only in the replacement of the brake pads and the lubrication of the repair kit of the support itself. Rarely there are cases when it is necessary to replace the repair kit of the brake cylinder. During repair, due to the simplicity of its design, the brake caliper does not require large financial costs.

Today brake calipers are used in almost all modern cars: passenger cars, trucks, off-road vehicles, and also in construction equipment. After all, this is reliability, combined with the simplicity of the design, which greatly simplifies its operation. Most likely, even for more than a decade, mankind will not invent a worthy replacement for the brake caliper.
