Recovery and prevention of hard drives: checking the disk for errors

Often, due to improper shutdown of the computer or other failures, errors occur and bad sectors appear on the hard local disk. This is fraught with incorrect loading of the operating system, loss of information and other problems, up to the failure of the hard drive. To restore the work, you must first check the hard disk for errors.

You can perform this operation in several ways.

If the operating system boots, then the test will not be difficult. To do this, you need to open the properties of the hard disk or flash drive, enter the context menu (called by the mouse button on the right), in the opened list, select the "properties" item, then successively set to "service" - "perform verification". In the appeared dialog box it is necessary to mark the items: "automatically correct system errors", and simultaneously "check and repair bad sectors", end the procedure with the start button. If the partition is checked with the operating system, it will only be executed when the computer is rebooted.

That's basically it. Further hard disk check for errors will occur in automatic mode. If malfunctions are detected, the system will correct them, if possible. If you find broken sectors, the running utility will mark them, and the hard disk will be suitable for further work. Solve the problem of hard drive failures from under the operating system (Windows) can be done with the help of third-party tools, there are a lot of free versions on the Internet.

A more complex way to solve a problem when the system does not boot. In order for the disk to be checked for errors, a disk with a virtual system is required. Booted from it, a shell similar to Windows will appear. Next, you should perform the same actions as in the first case.

If such a disk is missing, then the installation distribution with Windows will do. The disk for errors will be checked using the Recovery Console. Booting from the installation disc, when you see the first prompts, you must select the system restore. When the console mode appears on the screen, you should select the partition with the system, usually by default it is drive "C", then press the number 1 and enter, if necessary, the administrator password

In the C: \ WINDOWS> prompt that appears, type CHKDSK with the parameters F, R. It should look like this: C: \ WINDOWS> chkdsk / f / r. Then, press Enter and wait for the disk to check for errors. To exit the console, enter the Exit command.

If you can not log in, you can also use the WinPE virtual disk. Booted from it, you can apply various utilities to diagnose the hard drive and correct bad sectors and errors.

In some cases, due to errors and corrupt sectors, the system does not see certain partitions and does not determine their size. To get out of this situation, you need to apply Acronis Disk Director. Usually it is present in the boot disks.

After running the utility, the disk check for errors is performed as follows. The manual mode is selected, then the interesting section is highlighted (by default the system partition), and the "check" command is selected in the context menu. In the window that appears, select the item "search for bad sectors and errors" and click OK. The scan will be executed for a while, and if the program detects any damage, the program will automatically correct it. All information about the actions taken can be seen here.

Usually, to correct the primary errors, it is sufficient to apply the methods described above. Otherwise, the hard disk must be shown to specialists in the service center.
