In 1898, the City Duma decided that Pskov needed a room for performances. The Pushkin Theater was decided to be built according to the project of Eduard Germeier. The hall was supposed to accommodate 1200 spectators. The construction was completed in 1906. Initially, the theater was called the People's House named after A.S. Pushkin. There were such great artists as V. Komissarzhevskaya, A. Duncan, F. Shalyapin, P. Strepetova, L. Sobinov, K. Varlamov and many others. During the war, fascists captured the city of Pskov. The Pushkin Theater was used by the Germans as a club for events and concerts. The building was badly damaged by the bombing, it was plundered by the fascists. In 1946 the theater was renovated and again started working.

In the 1950s, artists such as V. Shubin, E. Vitorgan, T. Rumyantseva and many others started their creative career here.

Reconstruction

As it was already said above, in 1906 the Drama Theater acquired the city of Pskov. The Pushkin Theater (its building) was gradually dilapidated, in need of repair and re-equipment. The last reconstruction was carried out in the distant 1946.

In 2008 Andrei Turchak became the new governor of the region. He immediately took under his personal control the sphere of culture. It was he who allocated finance for the reconstruction of the building of the Drama Theater. Capital repair began in 2011. It lasted three years. The building was transformed. Its interiors, decor, even the color of the walls were restored - as they were originally. In each room was installed furniture, lighting fixtures and hung curtains for windows, as close to the historical.

For the theater was built the second building - next to the old one. The new premises housed rehearsal rooms, workshops, exhibition hall, workshops, in which decorations and costumes are made. Thus, the historical building is entirely given to the artists, and all technical personnel moved to the new house. Today there are two halls in the theater: the main hall, which seats 446 seats, and Maly - designed for 112 spectators.
