"Propalin" for dogs: analog, instructions for use, composition and reviews

Reviews about the French medicine "Propalin" are found on the forums of dog breeders quite often. The drug for drug treatment of dogs managed to receive an approving testimonial from both veterinarians and owners of four-legged friends. However, this medicine, intended for course therapy, can not always be purchased in veterinary specialized pharmacies. In this regard, dog breeders are often interested in what medicines can be replaced, if necessary, "Propalin". Are there any analogues that allow the dog to receive no less effective treatment?

What is the purpose of the drug "Propalin"?

The medical preparation "Propalin" for dogs is used for the purpose of treatment of urinary incontinence because of violations of the bladder. Dysfunction of the urinary system in the pet can occur for several reasons:

  • As a result of age-related changes;
  • Weakening of the dog's bladder's sphincter;
  • Negative consequences of sterilization (castration) of the animal;
  • Various diseases, infections.

In the case of the latter, the problem of urinary incontinence may disappear after the treatment of an infection or disease and an additional "Propalin" for dogs (an analogue of the drug) is not required.

Description and form of release

"Propalin" is available in the form of a suspension, a colorless homogeneous syrup, packaged in a volume of 30 or 100 ml. The kit includes a plastic bottle with a suspension, an abstract to the drug and a measuring syringe dispenser.

How it works?

How does "Propalin" work for dogs (analogue based on the same substance)? Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride, the main active substance of the drug, after ingestion into the animal's body is rapidly absorbed through the blood. A few hours after taking the drug, the active ingredient begins to affect the muscles of the urethra and bladder, toning them and stimulating an intensive contraction of muscle tissue. From the body of the dog, "Propalin" is excreted along with the urine naturally.

How to apply: dosage, instructions

Dosage of the drug is calculated based on the body weight of the pet, according to one of the two proposed schemes of course treatment:

  • 3 times a day at the rate of 2 drops per 1 kg of body weight of the dog;
  • 2 times a day at the rate of 3 drops per 1 kg of body weight of the dog.

For large dogs weighing from 25 kg and above, the dosage of the suspension in which "Propalin" is given (analogues for dogs whose composition includes the same active ingredient) is calculated according to the scheme 3 times a day at a rate of 0.5 ml per 25 Kg of body weight of the dog or twice a day at the rate of 0.75 ml per 25 kg of body weight of the dog.

The increase in the recommended rate does not contribute to the increase in the effectiveness of therapy. The dosage of the drug can be reduced by a veterinarian after a long period of treatment.

In accordance with the attached instructions, the drug "Propalin" should be offered to the pet, guided by the following rules:

  • The drug should be given to the dog along with the food, it is recommended to add the drug directly into the food;
  • The duration of the course of therapy is determined by the veterinarian individually for each case, in general, there are no restrictions on the duration of treatment with "Propalin";
  • The open drug is stored for 3 months in a dark place, the recommended temperature is from +15 to +25 ° C;
  • Used empty packaging, measuring dispenser (syringe) and plastic container are disposed of, it is strictly prohibited to use them for other purposes.

You should pay attention: contraindications, overdose

It is important to remember that a doctor of a veterinary clinic should prescribe the preparation "Propalin" for dogs (analogue with the same active ingredient), and also determine the dosage in each individual case. The same specialist will certainly warn about existing contraindications to the use of "Propylene". The drug under consideration is not assigned under the following conditions:

  • The hypersensitivity of the animal to the main components of the "Propalin" (a visible side effect - various allergic reactions) can be detected;
  • During pregnancy (lactation) of the animal;
  • If anticholinergic drugs, antidepressants, any sympathomimetics have already been prescribed and are being used at the moment.

No less dangerous is the incorrectly calculated amount of the drug used at a time. The consequence of this may be an overdose. Determine this phenomenon can be on the following grounds:

  • The dog has shortness of breath;
  • The pupils of the animal are markedly enlarged;
  • The dog is restless.

If one or more symptoms are found, the owner is required to immediately show the pet to the vet.

Reviews about the drug "Propalin"

Despite the possibility of negative side effects, the drug "Propalin" is currently considered one of the safest ways to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. And what do the owners, whose pets receive treatment, say about this drug?

  • "Propalin" gives a good result with a long effect of action;
  • The first results of therapy are noticeable after 7-14 days from the beginning of admission;
  • Absence of an unpleasant aftertaste of a preparation: at addition of "Propalin" in food dogs do not refuse meal;
  • Side effects, declared on the packaging, practically does not arise.

Claims of dog owners most often refer not to the quality of the medicine, but to disruptions with the supplies of "Propalin" to Russian veterinary drugstores and to a rather high price of the product. As of the beginning of 2017, the retail price varies from 460 rubles per package of 30 ml to 1,300 rubles per unit of 100 ml.

How to replace "Propalin": analogues

Despite the effectiveness, the main drawback of the drug is too high demand and its regular absence in pharmacies, especially in small settlements. In addition, the price of this medication is relatively high. In this connection, the question of how and how to replace "Propalin" is very relevant. Analogues for dogs suffering from urinary incontinence should also be agreed with the treating veterinarian.

To date, the only medicine that can be fully described as identical to "Propalin" is the drug for people "Dietrin." Despite the fact that this drug is prescribed for other purposes, the main active ingredient of "Dietrin" is the same - phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride. This makes it possible to temporarily or permanently replace "Propalin" for dogs. The analogue should be used with caution, observing the dosage calculated by the veterinarian.

Important! There are two medicines sold in pharmacies called "Dietrin." One of them is essentially a dietary supplement and you can not replace it with "Propalin". You can distinguish these funds by reading the composition on the package. BAD "Dietrin" consists of natural herbal ingredients. To treat the pet should be replaced with "propalin" analogs for dogs or people whose composition includes phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride, regardless of the form of release of the drug.

Also in Russian pharmacies, you can find another preparation of phenylpropanolamine, an American medication for weight reduction, "Trimex." But there is a reason why it is quite difficult to replace "Trimex" with the drug "Propalin" - an analogue in the pharmacy can be purchased strictly by prescription. And a veterinarian can not give such a prescription for treating a dog.

In an extreme case, a substitute for "Propalin" for dogs can be assigned an analogue based on other active substances. To such concerns, for example, "Vesicar", antispasmodic, designed to reduce the tone of the urinary tract. The same effect has drugs based on oxybutynin hydrochloride ("Driptan", "Sibutin").

Medicines for alternative treatment

For cases where none of the above preparations can be purchased or the course determined by the veterinarian does not give the desired effect, an alternative treatment of the dog is prescribed. As a rule, we are talking about hormonal therapy.

For this purpose, human medicines based on the female hormone estrogen are prescribed. Replacing "Propalin" analogs for dogs (the list of such drugs is incomplete, at the veterinarian's discretion, another hormonal agent may be prescribed) is:

  • "Ovestin" - is prescribed more often than others, can be used in any form of release: cream, candles or tablets;
  • "Marvelon" (a contraceptive containing estrogen);
  • "Livial" (a drug against menopause, containing tibolone).

Due to the course of hormonal drugs, the tone of the muscular tissues of the sphincter of the urinary bladder of the animal rises, and the walls of the bladder, on the contrary, gradually relax. Thus, the problem of urinary incontinence can be solved. The main disadvantage of this therapy is the large number of side effects that can occur during the treatment with hormone-containing drugs.
