Picture "Troika" V.G. Perova: history of creation and description
A few words about the author of the canvas
The picture "Troika" is, perhaps, one of the most emotional and famous works of the artist Vasily Grigorievich Perov. He was born in the city of Tobolsk. When his parents moved to Nizhny Novgorod Province, the future great master entered the Arzamas Uyezd School. In the same place, he studied intermittently in an art school, which Vasily did not manage to finish. But later the future artist was educated at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. During his life, the master wrote many wonderful paintings. Among them are such works as "Arrival of the host", "The Boy-Craftsman", "Lamentations of Yaroslavna" and many others.
Picture «Troika»: description
This work was written by the author in 1866. This was a difficult time for Russia. Serfdom has already been abolished, but this did not correct the plight of the Russian peasantry. His life was still poor and destitute. Many masters of art were then concerned about the issue of social inequality, lack of rights and poor peasants, coercion to pay "a teardrop child" for some vital benefits.
This is reflected in his painting artist. In the center of it are depicted three children (craftsmen), carrying a huge icy barrel of water. These are two boys and a girl. In the yard there is winter, it is getting dark, on the road - ice. A sharp cold wind blows their inferior clothes. Pouring out of the barrel of water immediately turns into icicles. How cold it must be for the children in such a frost! .. It can be seen that they were completely exhausted. Some kind person helps them to drag the barrel to the hillock. The cart is accompanied by a dog that runs a little to the right in front of the children. The painting is painted in gloomy gray-brown tones. Even the snow around is dark. Thus, the master wanted to show the viewer all the dullness, despair and horror of the situation when young children are forced to perform such a black work. The environment is also pumped by an icy, deserted street. What are the heroes of the picture associated with onlookers? The very name of it says that the work of these children can be compared with the work of horses. In the public, the work in question causes an acute pity for the poor children, whose share of such a difficult fate has fallen.

Sitters
The author of the work has long been looking for sitters for their work. For the figures of the girl and the extreme left boy, he found them. But for the image of the central hero, the artist could not "look after" a suitable child. The picture "The Three" was already written more than half when Perov met once on the street a peasant woman with his son, who were walking from the Ryazan village to the monastery. When he saw the boy, he immediately realized that this is the central figure that does not reach the canvas. After talking with the woman, the master found out that her name was Auntie Marya, and her son - Vasya. Her fate is not easy. She buried all her children and her husband, who died of illness and need. Twelve-year-old Vasya is her only hope and consolation. After hearing a bitter story, Perov suggested that a woman draw her son. She agreed. So the picture has a new character.
The fate of the main character
This story has a continuation. Once, four years after writing the picture, an old woman came to Perov in a sheepskin coat and dirty bast shoes. In it, the master hardly recognized that same Aunt Mary. She handed him a small bundle of eggs. "As a gift," the woman explained. With tears in her eyes, the peasant woman told the artist that her Vassenka had died last year, seriously ill. Left completely alone, the woman sold all her belongings, worked all winter, and, having saved up a little money, she came to Perov to buy back his painting with his simple savings, depicting her beloved son. The master explained to his poor mother that the painting "Troika" is in the gallery, that it is impossible to acquire it. But you can see it. When the woman was in front of the picture, she fell to her knees and, crying bitterly, began to pray at her. Touched by this scene, the artist promised his mother to paint a portrait of her son. He fulfilled his obligation and sent his work to the woman in a gilded frame.
