Numbness of the facial skin: causes and treatment. Numbness of the face as a symptom of the disease

It is quite common that the numbness arises from phlebological problems. In particular, they include varicose veins, thrombosis and others. However, experts say that if paresthesia appears in such cases, then due to neglected forms of vascular pathologies, in which a prolonged existing edema in the tissues compresses the nerve trunks and damages them. Next, consider how often there may be numbness in body parts. Causes and treatment will also be described in the article.

Radicular syndromes

These include radiculopathy - radiculitis, which are associated with either inflammatory processes, vascular disorders, or with mechanical effects on the nerve roots in the segments of the spinal cord and the spine of the intervertebral hernia. Radicular syndromes are considered the most common cause of numbness.

Polyneuropathy

The most common of them is considered diabetic. It is characterized by damage to the nerves and vessels as a result of a prolonged high glucose level and due to metabolic disturbances. The violation of sensitivity is always symmetrical. As a rule, numbness occurs on the periphery of the lower and upper limbs - in the area of socks and gloves.

Stroke

This condition is considered one of the most dangerous causes of sensitivity disorders. Numbness in this case develops due to acute circulatory disorders, triggered by blockage of blood vessels that feed the brain, or hemorrhage. As a result, the areas responsible for the sensitivity of one or another area of the body are damaged. In this case, paresthesia occurs on one side of the body according to the hemitis: either of the entire body half, including numbness of the facial skin, or limbs.

Brain tumor

This pathology can also act as a cause of numbness. The same applies to aneurysms (pathological dilatations of the walls of blood vessels) and subdural hematomas that form under the hard shells of the brain. As a rule, these pathologies occur in the elderly with falls, even minor ones. For such states, one-sided impairment of sensitivity is characteristic. In patients, numbness of the facial skin occurs, for example, paresthesia of one hand or any half of the trunk. Unpleasant sensations in this case are not acute. They can appear and disappear, growing with the passage of time.

Numbness of head and face: general information

This condition is characterized by an unpleasant tingling sensation. On the cover there is a feeling of "goose bumps". In a number of cases, sensitivity deteriorates. Numbness of the person whose causes and treatment will be described later may be accompanied by swelling, burning, loss of control over muscle contractions. The syndrome can manifest itself in varying degrees, from mild to severe, manifested by complete paralysis. If numbness of the skin of the face is observed for an extended period, a thorough examination is necessary.

The provoking factors

Why does numbness appear? The reasons for the appearance of unpleasant sensations are very different. Among the most common are diseases of nerves or vessels that pass through this zone. When the condition spreads to other areas of the body, the specialist can assume that the case is in the pathologies of the central nervous system. Often manifested numbness of the face as a symptom of the disease. There are several pathologies, for which the occurrence of paresthesia is characteristic. The most popular should include:

  • Bella is a paralysis. This disease appears as a result of a viral infection (herpes, meningitis and others). It provokes an inflammatory process in the nerve fibers. This, in turn, entails numbness in the skin of the face, lips and tongue.
  • Cervical osteochondrosis. This disease is one of the most common causes of paresthesia. The decrease in sensitivity and unpleasant sensations in this case are the result of constant compression of the vessels and nerves of the spine with accumulated salts. In this case, numbness of the skin of the face is accompanied by soreness in the cervical region, ailments, vertebrae crunch when turning the neck.
  • Multiple sclerosis. This is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune cells begin to attack and damage the nerves. This as a result causes the destruction of the protective membrane of the fibers (myelin). Because of these injuries, numbness of the face, paresthesia of the neck, limbs appears.
  • The defeat of the trigeminal nerve. Neuralgia develops due to irritation or squeezing of fibers outside or inside the skull. This is due to adhesions after the expansion of the cerebellar arteries or veins, injuries, inflammatory processes in the region of the oral or nasal cavity. Against the background of pathology, numbness is not the only symptom. Together with this, the patient feels severe pain near the ears, eyes and nose.
  • Infringement of nerves. In this case, we are talking about the damage or irritation of the upper or lower jaw, eye nerves. As a result, sensitivity is impaired, which in turn manifests itself in the form of numbness.
  • Shingles. This pathology is accompanied not only by paresthesia. Tingling, loss of sensation accompanied by itching and rash in the face, headache, chills and fever.

Other factors

Numbness of the face can be caused by a lack of vitamins B-group, sodium, calcium, potassium. As provoking factors, stress, depression are. Numbness of the face acts as one of the side effects when taking a number of medications. Paresthesias are often a sign of an ischemic transient attack. In some cases, numbness of the skin on the face before the attacks of migraine, with hyperventilation. Paresthesia can occur due to an uncomfortable position during sleep. At quarrels or emotional conversation at many the muscles of the face strongly are compressed (chewing more often). This provokes hypertonia, which leads to unpleasant sensations, tingling and deterioration of sensitivity. Often numbness of the face appears after a long work at the computer, needlework, reading. In this case, you need to change the position of the trunk and make small breaks.

Diagnostics

If there is severe numbness that persists for a long time, you should visit a specialist as soon as possible. This feature is an indication for conducting a thorough examination. In the course of diagnosis, the condition in which the trigeminal nerve is located is evaluated, the x-ray of the internal auditory aperture, the nasopharynx, and the base of the skull are performed. Also during the examination, an MRI or CT of the cranial fossa (posterior), ultrasound of the vessels , can be performed . In addition, serological responses to syphilis, as well as labial puncture, are prescribed. With an unexplained diagnosis, the patient is referred to the otolaryngologist for consultation and examination of the posterior regions of the nasal cavity.

How to get rid of paresthesias?

In some cases, numbness of the face passes by itself. For example, when a person stays in an uncomfortable position. Change of position promotes the flow of blood to the problem area and the return of normal sensitivity. You can speed up the process by rubbing the skin. With numbness, accompanied by stiffness of movements, dizziness, soreness, weakness, emergency help may be required. To disturbing signs also include involuntary emptying of the intestine or bladder, loss of ability to move or talk. If numbness occurs as a result of a head injury or back, help should be given as quickly as possible. If paresthesia is a sign of a disease, treatment is aimed at eliminating pathology. For example, with multiple sclerosis, the patient is prescribed a course of B vitamins and corticosteroids. With neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve, therapy is aimed at reducing soreness. For this, anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents are used. As a rule, with this pathology, the drug "Prednisolone" is prescribed. In addition, the patient is recommended special exercises for facial plastic surgery. In some cases, unpleasant sensations are eliminated after wiping with alcohol solution of the problem area.

Preventive actions

First of all, you need to be careful about your health. Experts recommend avoiding hypothermia and drafts. If there are any pathologies, do not delay the visit to the doctor and wait for the development of their chronic form.
