"Notes of a young doctor" Bulgakov MA - the subject-moral content

M.A. Bulgakov began to write when he was still 15 or 17, probably then he did not write well, but he could already inwardly say to himself: "I will become a writer or nobody." So it eventually came out. However, between the 17-year-old writer and the famous classic of Russian literature there was one intermediate station - the medical faculty of the Kiev University. M.A. Bulgakov entered there for financial reasons - his relatives-doctors earned well. He probably did not know then that medicine would become a springboard for him in literature. Without medical practice, there would not have been an early masterpiece - a work of "The Notes of a Young Doctor".

M.A. Bulgakov is an anthropologist

Everybody in our country says "We are in awe" when it comes to "Master and Margarita". Every schoolboy considers it his duty to say that the ballad of the Master is his favorite book. The disgraced Soviet writer became the property of the masses - what a horror. But "Notes of a young doctor" Bulgakov remain, thank God, hidden from the sight of the crowd, and they are enjoyed by those who really appreciate the prose of Mikhail Afanasyevich.

All those problems, prominently highlighted in the main novel of the Soviet classic, were already presented in his earlier works. M.A. Bulgakov as an anthropologist of the Soviet people has always been interested in the indestructible characteristics of the latter: ignorance, love of paper red tape, trembling and servility before the authorities, the presence in him, despite the "bright image", of low "human, too human" "passions" - love of money, Sensual pleasures, drinking. All the future thematic "pain" of the Russian classic is somehow represented in the cycle of short stories "Notes of a Young Doctor".

What are the notes about?

If we talk about the collection of short stories "Notes of a young doctor", the summary of them is reduced to a description of partly real and partly invented stories with an obligatory moral content. They happened with MA. Bulgakov, when he worked as a general practitioner in the village of Nikolskoye, Smolensk region. He stayed there for about a year.

"Towel with a cock"

Stories that are part of the cycle "Notes of a young doctor" Bulgakov, open the case of a young girl whose limbs are imprudently caught in a malleus. From one leg below the knee, there were only "rags", the other was severely damaged. The doctor was still inexperienced, he had just arrived at the duty station. Although he is in a state of shock, he quickly decides to amputate his leg, from which little is left. After a while (two months) the girl in gratitude brings a towel with a cock.

"Baptism by turn"

Another case with a young doctor occurs when a pregnant woman is brought in, and her fetus does not stand up as it should. The doctor again panic, he rushes to read some medical books, encyclopedias, finding nothing in them necessary and useful, throws them into the corner of the cabinet and learns from a midwife. In the end, successfully performs an operation to turn the fetus. Then, when it was all over, after a while he picked up a book lying in the corner of the office, and began to read, it turned out that there was a lot of important and necessary in fact. Perhaps, the most ridiculous "thing" of the cycle of stories "Notes of a young doctor" Bulgakov.

Steel throat

In this story, under the author's bombardment, the illiteracy of villagers falls, which did not allow the doctor to make a girl with diphtheria, tracheotomy for a long time. Then people thought that the doctor was a magician, and he put the girl in her throat instead of steel.

"Snowstorm"

On the unfortunate case: the woman hit her head, bleeding started, raised a young doctor who just lay down, said that without him can not cope. He was equipped with a sleigh, he drove to the sick man's house, but he could not save her any more. Then, without hesitation for a second, he set off on his way back, but a blizzard flew ... some place in the story is devoted to the fight against the elements, but then the doctor nevertheless gets home.

"Darkness of Egypt"

In the heart of the story again is the story of human ignorance. On the birthday of the doctor, a miller comes to him, as it turns out later, a malaria patient. The doctor prescribes him quinine, the miller, not included in the fineness of the treatment, emptied all 10 packages at once, in order to quickly recover. He was barely saved. Funny and at the same time tragic in this is that at the festive table the doctor argued to colleagues that not all the villagers are uneducated and ignorant.

The title of the story says that there is nothing blacker than human ignorance, and even "the darkness of Egypt" does not compare with it.

"The Missing Eye"

In this story of the cycle "Memoirs of a young doctor" by Bulgakov, the physician at first admires the acquired experience and in every possible way exaggerates, but then life puts it in its place again. The doctor comes across a patient with some strange education on the eye, to determine what it is, does not succeed. And then the abscess (which was he) is eliminated by itself. And the young doctor gives himself a vow never to revel in his own greatness and mythical "experience." Actually, this is the main moral meaning of the story.

"Star rash"

The last story from the cycle is again devoted to the theme of ignorance of patients. A peasant came to the doctor, who "laid his throat". He has syphilis diagnosed, and he thinks it's a joke and that he has a common cold. Dissatisfied with the doctor, he leaves. Then a woman comes and says with tears that her husband reported a terrible illness in a letter. It is examined and nothing is finally found. It turns out that in those parts the real syphilitic "plague" is rampaging. Many and many suffer from it, but they do not want to be treated in any way. This work is crowned with "Notes of a young doctor"

For whom are written "Notes ..."?

The answer is obvious: for all. They should be read to both patients and doctors. The first is to not neglect treatment, and the second will remember the natural modesty that a doctor should have if he wants to become a high-class professional. And Bulgakov's stories are interesting because they, continuing the Gogol line in literature, show how the Russian national character has changed under the conditions of Soviet reality.
