History of the University

The Lesgaft Institute of Physical Culture was founded by Professor Lesgaft with money donated to him by philanthropist Innokenty Mikhailovich Sibiryakov. Anyone can come and listen to the course of very interesting lectures on the topics of the natural sciences, and completely free of charge.

At the laboratory of the courses, a huge zoological museum was created by teachers and students, in which visitors could get acquainted with the fauna of Russia. In addition to the museum, large herbariums of the flora of the northern latitudes of Russia, the Caucasus and Siberia were collected in the cabinets. In addition, the laboratories had original collections of minerals and deposits of rocks of all periods of the Earth's existence.

Lesgaft Institute already had several rooms at the beginning of its activity: histological, physiological, anatomical and embryological, in the walls of which students learned knowledge, and there was also a chemical laboratory for experiments.

In the premises of the laboratory in the nineteen ninety-sixth year, the courses of teachers of physical education were founded. Each department of social, pedagogical and biological sciences and courses was designed for 4 years of study.

Since the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety-six the pedagogical council of the laboratory began to publish the popular scientific journal Izvestiya of the St. Petersburg Biological Laboratory, whose editor was PF Lesgaft himself.

University Awards

The Institute of Lesgaft Petersburg for the years of pedagogical activity was awarded with orders and diplomas.

The very first high award awarded to the educational institution in 1939 for high performance and exemplary work is the Order of Lenin.

In July of the same year, the Council of Working People's Deputies of the city of Leningrad awarded the institute with a banner for high achievements in the field of sports and training young professionals.

In April 1941, for the excellent performance of combat missions during the war with the German invaders, the Lesgaft Institute (SPb) was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.

Lenin's Honorary Jubilee Certificate was handed over in April of one thousand nine hundred and seventy years for high figures in the socialist competition.

And in January two thousand and eleven, the President of the Russian Federation expressed special gratitude for the enormous contribution to the development of education in the field of sports.

Educational achievements of the university

The Lesgaft Institute is currently the only higher educational physical education institution in Russia that is part of the European Association of Sports Universities.

Glorious traditions and sporting achievements

Over the years, the university has trained outstanding graduates who became champions and won a total of more than one hundred and seventy gold medals in the Olympiads, and at various world championships the pupils won about seven hundred gold medals. Over five hundred graduates received the title of Honored Trainers in various sports.

Institute of Physical Education. Lesgaft is famous for the fact that science luminaries such as physicist Abram Fedorovich Ioffe, physiologist and first Russian Nobel Prize winner Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, physiologist Aleksei Alekseevich Ukhtomsky, great historian Yevgeny Tarle and many others taught at its walls.

The future biologist, anatomist, physician and educator was born on September 8, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-seven in St. Petersburg in the family of Germans who remained in Russia. His father, Peter Otto Lesgaft, was a jeweler and was a member of the Golden Arts Workshop. Being the owner of a small jewelry store, his father had a small income, which affected the upbringing of the growing up boy-his father taught him from childhood not only to order, but also to economy in everything. Peter's mother, Henrietta Adamovna, awakened in the boy from an early age a love of music. Education of parents and the situation in the family laid in the boy such qualities as disinterestedness, respect for work, principledness - they became the features of his character and determined his entire future life.

Up to nine years, the future scientist passed home schooling, and at the age of nine he was sent to the St. Petra. The study was given to him very easily, and at the same time he was a diligent student - he worked on books for a long time and faithfully carried out assignments.

At the age of 17, the young man graduated from the school and he became interested in medicine and chemistry. In the summer of the same year he became a freshman in the medical and surgical academy. At the third year of the institute, he was so carried away by anatomy that he gave her everything without a trace.

In one thousand eight hundred and sixty-first year Lesgaft successfully passes all the exams, having received a doctor's degree. And all his further life Peter Franzevich devoted medicine.

On December 11 nineteen hundred and ninth the heart of a great scientist stopped after a long illness. He was buried at Volkovsky Cemetery.

Structure of the university

The University consists of five institutes. It:

Duration of training is 4 years. The Institute attaches great importance to the continuous improvement of information support for the educational and scientific process.

Library of the Institute

The library is one of the units of the university and is located in the former prince's palace. The value and pride of the library is a unique collection of rare books, which includes editions that belonged to Lesgaft himself and his colleagues. They are devoted to the issues of physical education, as well as all the disciplines studied at that time in the courses.

Currently, the library serves about 17 000 visitors annually, and the number of books issued reaches half a million copies. The library owns about seven hundred thousand copies of books, various publications, methodical guides, the main part of which covers the theme of sports. The library introduced electronic book delivery.

On the territory of the library there is a shop "Sportbook". Buyers are offered a lot of literature on physical culture and sports, on medical and biological issues, psychology and economics in the field of sports. And also presented methodical and training manuals of the Institute staff.

For nonresident students, the Lesgaft Institute provides a hostel, which is located on the Prospectus of the Testers.

Duration of classes and break

The duration of lectures and classes is one and a half hours. The break between the pairs is mandatory - fifteen minutes. Additionally, students are given a lunch break of 30 minutes.

Reviews of the Institute of Physical Education. Lesgaft in the bulk of its mass is positive. The students are very fond of studying. The training base allows preparing world-class athletes, this is also facilitated by a teaching staff consisting of honored masters of sports. Education can also be obtained by citizens of foreign countries, which increases the prestige of the institution.

But there are also negative reviews. For example, the parents of some students are very unhappy that when injuries occur in their children's classes, the student polyclinic does not always have the necessary equipment and medication to conduct adequate treatment. In such cases, the injured are referred to the city hospital, and for the services of the doctor, parents have to pay a considerable amount.
