Mystical Romania. Korvinov Castle and its legends

In a mysterious and mysterious Romania there are dozens of castles and palaces that are rushing to share their legends with tourists. We will describe one of them in this article. This is the castle of Corvinus (Hunyadi).

Romania is a country of mysticism and castles

This state in South-Eastern Europe has long established itself as mystical and mysterious. Numerous tourists come here just for thrills, riddles and legends. Well, what could be more mystical and legendary than locks?

History "gave" Romania a generous necklace of castles, fortresses and palaces. They are scattered all over the country, and each of these objects is interesting and special in its own way. Some Romanian castles are magnificent and elegant, others - gloomy and frightening. The latter, as a rule, are more popular among tourists.

Among the most famous and visited fortresses in Romania are Brann, Poener, Peles and Corvinus Castle. Each of these objects is ready to please the traveler with its legends and incredible stories.

The city of Hunedoara and its castle

In the south-west of Romania, in the valley of the river Cerny, is located a small, but ancient city of Hunedoara. It was founded in the distant 1265 year.

Today it is an important metallurgical center of the country. About 3 million tons of steel are smelted annually. Quarters of the old city are not bad, where you can see several beautiful churches. But the main attraction of Hunedoara is on its southwestern outskirts. This is the Korvinov Castle, built during the Middle Ages by representatives of the noble Hungarian Hunyadi family.

The fortress grew in the middle of the XV century on a hill by the efforts of Janos Hunyadi (Corvinus). Construct the castle continued his son Matiyash, giving the Gothic structure of the features of the early Renaissance.

For its history, the castle of Corvinus in Romania had 22 owners. In the XVIII century it became the property of the Habsburg dynasty and turned into a large warehouse for storing iron products. In the middle of the twentieth century, the fortress survived a large-scale restoration, after which it opened to tourists as a museum.

Korvinov Castle: working hours, ticket prices

The fortress can be visited daily, from 9 am to 5 pm. True, the entrance to the castle closes at 16:30. Admission ticket for an adult costs 25 lei, for a child - 5 lei. To get permission to photograph or videotape, you will have to pay additionally (5 and 15 lei accordingly). In the castle you can also rent one of the premises for any events. The price of such pleasure is 600 lei per one hour.

Korvinov Castle very often turns into a film set for various feature films and documentaries. On such days it can be closed to ordinary tourists.

Walking around the castle

7000 square meters - this is the total area of the castle Corvinus (Hunyadi) in Romania. There are 42 rooms, two terraces and two bridges. From a distance the castle looks beautiful, light and fabulous. However, its interiors are gloomy and formidable, they give the traveler an incomparable impression.

To get into the castle, you need to walk along a long wooden bridge over a deep ravine. Passing through the New Tower, the tourist enters the courtyard from which the prison is visible, the loggia of Matiyasha, and also the Golden Room. The last is to go to see the fascinating expositions of the Korvinov dynasty museum.

In the castle, it is worth to visit the Gothic Diet Hall, to which leads an elegant spiral staircase. No less interesting is the Hall of the Knights, the chapel with the most beautiful wall paintings, and also the Pit of the Bear, to which prisoners were imprisoned earlier.

Legends of the castle

Korvinov Castle is a real treasure trove of terrible stories and legends that local guides will gladly share. Thus, according to one of them, Count Dracula spent seven years imprisoned in this fortress (historians this person is better known as Vlad III Tepes). It was here, in the Bear Pit, that the Wallachian ruler, who had been deposed from his throne, sat. True, in real historical sources this legend does not find its confirmation.

Tourists like to tell and another, no less fascinating fable. So, according to legend, Ian Corwin (father of the Korvin dynasty) was the illegitimate son of Sigismund of Luxembourg - the King of Hungary. Newborn baby monarch gave the ring and sent it to the outskirts of the state. The boy grew up and once went on a long journey. The ring presented by the king was with him. On one of the halts his gleam drew a black crow. The bird flew up and stole the ring. Jan grabbed his bow and wanted to shoot the crow. But he suddenly turned back and returned the ring to the boy. So the raven became the family coat of arms of the Kovrin dynasty.

Thousands of tourists visit the Corvinus Castle every year. Romania is a country of legends, mysteries and mystical stories. Do not deprive them and this castle in the small transylvanian city of Hunedoara. Thus, according to one of the most popular legends, it was here that Count Dracula, who was known all over the world, was imprisoned for seven years in prison.
